We are travelling from Florence to Montepulciano. Is train then bus the best plan? Do we buy tickets at the station on the day of or do we need to reserve? Once in Montepulciano., like to do day trips...what is the best way to get around? Thank you

Doing day trips from Montepulciano is best done by car.

While a car would give you the most flexibilty for day trips, you can use buses to visit Pienza and Montalcino. Train to Chiusi and then bus is a good option if you don't want to rent a car. Bus schedules for the region are available online at www.trainspa.it, look at extraurbana schedules.
