I thought I saw something sometime back about packets of tickets, 8 or 10 trips, for reasonable prices on nonreserved trains. True, or am I dreaming?

Your memory is correct, at least in Belgium as far as I know. I don't remember the exact price, but it was definately less than 50 euro last time I was there.

EDIT- The current price is 73 euro, which still isn't bad. I could have sworn it was cheaper, though...
