We are planning the itinerary with 2 nights in Luzern, 4 nights in Murren , 3 nights in Salzburg, 1 night in Haldstatt and 3 nights in Munich. We are planning on at least 6 days of train travel, possibly 8 days. We have checked the 3 country select pass but that only provides for 1st class . We need help on other options that we can consider in getting the most value from a rail pass especially in view of the added costs of lifts or train while we are Murren.
Generally, rail passes are a bad deal. That said, do some research yourself from this very helpful and often recommended website:
http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-guide.htm#Should you buy a railpass or pay-as-you-go
Consider that several of these journeys will be on regional trains, not long distance.
Why are you planning to buy a rail pass and not just normal tickets?
Before you buy a rail pass read this webpage: http://seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-guide.htm
This whole website ( http://seat61.com/ ) is the best resource for information about rail travel there is.
You need to price up your 6 train trips individually before you consider getting a rail pass.
If you are planning to do a lot of train and cable car travel when you are in Mürren, a Berner Oberland Pass may be of advantage, as it has better reductions on the mountail railways and cable cars. Website: http://www.regiopass-berneroberland.ch/home-en
Adding to Chris' information...Switzerland has a 1 month Half Fare Card that gives you 50% discount all over Switzerland. If you plan to do the expensive Jungfrau trip then the HFC pretty much pays for itself in that trip alone.
Thank you for your input. After checking the websites advised, we decided that the rail pass would not be of value to us.
