Your choices are either the Ferry or Flying. Depending where you will be prior, compare the costs and balance with your time available. For instance, if you will be in Rome, figure train time and cost to Bari, then the ferry, then time to Athens if that is your destination. All of this will take you around 24 hours vs half a day by Air. Costs I am not sure of, though there are some budget flights from Rome (Aegean Air) From elsewhere in Italy, air would depend on what is available. As far as the Ferry goes, most all travel by night, so not much to see, if you want sleep, it is best to upgrade to a dorm bed or room. Do not get the impression that a ferry is a cruise ship, they may have food, drinks, and a casino; but all pretty basic and expensive. The most fun you could have will be the people you are with.
