We will be in Tuscany for 8 days this September and will have a rental car during that time. We plan to spend 3 nights in Florence - can anyone recommend a hotel(s) and city(ies) for those other 5 nites? Hoping to find something in the $150 - 180 US per nite range. I understand Siena is very nice. Thanks.

My family stayed right outside Greve-in-Chianti at the Castello di Lamole and it was lovely! They have taken a former "castle" in the hills and converted it into apartments. There is a fantastic restaurant on the property and another great one just up the hill. We did many day trips easily from here, including Florence and Siena! Check-it-out!

Steve, we stayed in Siena at Frances' Lodge, a wonderful B&B run by Franco and Frances. They are delightful people who will help you plan your time in the area, including wine tours and great restaurant suggestions. They are listed in Rick's Italy book and have a website: www.franceslodge.it. We enjoyed driving through the clay hills of southern Tuscany, which Frances recommended. You'll love it there.
