Somebody please answer this one as I plan to go between these cities at night, in one direction or other.

The route south that Lee is looking to take seems like a breeze.

It leaves Krakow as the #D200 at 22:25 and arrives in Budapest at 8:32 as the #EN377.

It does stop in a place called Bohumin from 1:09 to 2:13 for a bit of "Musical Cars", but other than that there are only two 10 to 15 minute stops and the rest they just slow down enough for people to hop on. Bratislava is only three minutes, 5:41 to 5:44.

Are the sleepers really that hideous?

Say it isn't so!

I've been researching this. Rick suggests stopping in Eger. Night train doesn't go to EGER now but the afternoon train does leaving Krakow at 1200 and getting into Eger about 2030. Then its only 2 hours to Budapest the next day.
