Four of us are flying from Málaga, Spain, to Milan, Italy, on EasyJet. We each will have one Rick Steves convertible carry-on bag. We have pre-checked one of our bags in which we will put liquids, bulkier stuff, etc. and are planning to carry on the others, since they are soft-sided and collapsible. Will this work? Has anyone flown EasyJet with the RS bags? Should we pre-check any other bags? The policy says 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 17.7 x 9.8 inches) is the maximum size for carry-ons, but if they are short of overhead space they will check bags larger than 50 x 40 x 20 cm (19.7 x 15.7 x 9.8 inches) - not sure if they charge for that. Since we all have the extra legroom/Speedy Boarding option we should be able to board early enough to get overhead bin space, as long as the bag is small enough - it appears to be borderline.
If your bag is small enough to be allowed as a carry-on, but they have to put it in the hold due to lack of cabin luggage space, you will not be charged. But it does mean you'll have to wait for it at the destination airport, if you're counting on leaving the airport quickly.
Sounds like you'll be fine, since your bags won't be stuffed and you have the Speedy Boarding. A not-full bag could even fit under the seat in front of you. Casually sling your bag over your shoulder like it's the lightest thing in the world, and they probably won't give it another glance.
Kathy.. do understand this ( I have flown Easyjet before) .. when they say ONE carry on.. they mean one and only one. Meaning your purse OR your bag.. not both.. so make sure there is room in your carry on bag to shove your purse inside it.. you can take it out onboard.
Kathy,
Since you'll be checking one bag, you'll have to wait at the carousel anyway so checking more than one shouldn't be an issue.
Whether or not the RS bags will be accepted for carry-on may depend to some extent on the interpretation of the gate agent at the time of boarding. It will have to be able to fit the sizing frame if they decide to check the size, and that could vary depending on how full the bag is packed. Weight isn't an issue with EasyJet but you will have to be able to lift it into the overhead bin.
As pat noted, EasyJet only allows ONE carry-on item per passenger. That doesn't mean "one plus a personal item such as a purse", it means ONE ONLY of the approved size.
One point to note regarding the one bag you plan to check. If you think it will be heavier than their allowable weight, it's much cheaper to pay for the next weight tier at the time of booking rather than at the gate.
