My husband and I would like to spend a week biking in the Loire Valley this September. We don't want to take a tour. We want to travel with our panniers. I'd like to know if it is safe (enough) to cable our panniers to our bikes in the parking lots while we are touring the chateaux along the way. I know we could hire a luggage transfer company but that is not our first choices. Any thoughts?
You might want to post that question on Trip Advisor, a great many locals read the posts and reply there. Good for you not wanting to take a tour...we did the same from Aschach an der Donau to Vienna along the Danube...wonderful. We used Bikeline maps. They are in German but the absolute best for Europe biking.

Have a fantastic trip!
I have done that without problems, but I later started doing day trips from a central location where I didn'g have to worry about it. I biked centered on Onzain (across the river from Chaumont) and Azay-le-Rideau.
