Gluten free food in Italy

Thanks for everyone's help. My meals are ordered coming and going. Does anyone know if Italy has the same problem with gluten as US? Think I can eat their pasta? Thank you!!!

Pharmacies and most grocery stores have a gluten-free section where you can buy snacks. In restaurants the wait staff will recommend gluten-free options; the words you need are "senza gluten" (without gluten). Italy is said to be one of the easiest countries in which to eat gluten-free.

What is the same problem with gluten as the US? Are you dealing with a true health issue or a diet preference?

The same wheat problem...genetically engineered. It isn't celiac disease but very important to stick to it.

You are very unlikely to find genetically modified food in Europe, including wheat, unless it is imported from the US or some other country with lax GM standards.

Robyn, Italy is very easy to eat gluten free. My wife has Celiac and we had no problems at any restaurants on a 16 day trip. The correct term in Italian is senza glutine.

Hello!! We are in Rome and things went perfectly on Luftanza. Both flights had my GF meals waiting. They were as tasty as any flight food I have had. Thank you for the comments!!!

It is really easy to eat gf in Italy. In Venice I found a Billa or Coop store, regular groceries, with a moderate sized gf area, for cheap. Yes, the pharmacies have gf stuff, but are pricier. Use google to,try and find the grocers where .u are going. Enjoy!

Other than people who truly have Celiac disease and have to avoid gluten, is there any health benefit to avoiding gluten or just another fad diet?

Not a fad for me...I have rheumatoid arthritis and after 19 years of pain, at times excruciating, I am pain free. Also I feel overall more energetic. The book Wheat Belly was my reason to give it a try. I don't need to lose weight so wouldn't go to this extent if it didn't help. Thx for asking!!
