We will be taking a Mediterranean cruise in Oct. and we stop in Pisa/Florence. We were told that it is about an hour train ride from Pisa to Florence. We want to see the museums in Florence. We've heard about the art museums. Any suggestions? Thank you,
Chris
Chris, once you get to Pisa Centrale from the cruise port, the train ride is indeed about 1hr to 1hr15min depending on the train you are on. This is a popular trip from the Livorno cruise port. Note that most museums are closed on Mondays.
Thanks for the info. We will be in port on a Thur. I think. We appreciate any info. we can get. We do have a copy of Rick Steve's Florence book I found at the library. We will look at it and see what he has to say about the area. Chris
We did this cruise last year. Getting to Pisa from Livorno is easy. There are trains about every 15-20 minutes and the ride takes about 15-20 minutes. From there you hop on the next train to Florence. Figure about three hours off of your "land time" for the train back and forth. Another option to consider is Lucca. We went there instead of Florence because we had been to Florence on a previous trip. Lucca is a really nice town, very quaint and laid back. We biked around the wall and strolled through the town and loved it. Travel time to Lucca is about the same as Florence, maybe a little less. Also, you should know the train station is not walking distance from the port. You need to take a transfer bus from the ship to town then a city bus to the train station. It is easy and clearly explained in the RS cruise book.
Chris, If you plan on visiting the two "big" art museums in Florence, the Uffizi and Accademia, it would be a REALLY good idea to book a reservation well in advance. That will save you from wasting a LOT of time waiting in a queue to buy tickets. There's information on how to get reservations in the Guidebook. As the others have mentioned, the rail trip from Pisa Centrale to Firenze SMN will vary from 0H:49M to 1H:15M, depending on which train you use. Current fares listed at 7.90€ PP each way. Most of the trains on that route will be Regionale so don't forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train, or you'll risk being fined 40-50€ PP on the spot. You can research rail travel details using the Trenitalia website. Buon Viaggio!
Thank you for the info. especially the reminder about validating the train ticket. We definitely will make reservations in advance for the museums. Thank you again for the suggestions. Blessings,
Chris
