flying to Italy

Any suggestions on reasonable prices for flights/airlines to Rome in June and from Naples in early July? Things are fairly expensive now. Do you think prices will go down? Does anyone have any creative solutions such as fly into Milan or any other European destination that makes sense and then take the train or take one way flights once in Europe? Mary

Mary, we always search all options. For our Christmass trip this past Dec, we found the best deal searching for an Open Jaw" trip ie. into one airport, and out of another.

Last June we got the best price by looking for the cheapest flight to anyplace in the EU. We were going to Rome also, and then returning from southern Italy (Brindisi). We found a $548 R/T from Portland to Frankfurt. We then used rental cars, etc. and the lo-cost inter EU airlines for the balance of our trip, and to return to FRA.

We use whichbudet.com to find some of those lo-cost inter EU airlines. We have also found that Lufthansa and Air One offered some very good prices for the inter EU trips.

We found our best prices when we used some search engines to notify us when good prices would pop up. (Orbitz, Kayak, farecompare.com, etc.) In many cases 12 weeks before the trip we would get a notice of a few cheap seats, and we would grab them.

You need to define "reasonable." June, July, August are high season with little or no discounting. Rome is a high demand location so Milan might be slightly more reasonable. Doubt if you can fly directly to Naples -- probably will need a connecting flight somewhere in Europe.
