Budapest to Prague

We're scheduled to travel from Budapest to Prague on 13/10/2013. By train it is a 6 1/2 hour trip. I've checked whizz air, Easyjet and others mentioned in your Eastern Europe book, but have not found an airline that flys between the two cities. What do you suggest as the best and fastest why to get to Prague from Budapest? Thank you.

Not the best answer, but even if you did find a direct flight it would not be much faster than the train once you factor in time to and from the airport along with the obligatory arriving a couple hours before the flight.
You might also want to look to see if the major bus lines (Orange, Student, Euro) run at convenient times. They would be a s fast as the train, but less expensive.

Thanks. You've confirmed what I was beginning to think.

Looking at http://www.skyscanner.com, I see that Czech Air has two nonstops on that day (leaving at 15:05 and 19:50). The fare for one-way travel is $428, but if you buy a round-trip and throw away the second part, it's "only" $285. Other flights are cheaper, but have stopovers, so they won't save any time over a train. Malev, Hungary's former airline, no longer exists. Lack of competition increases fares. I agree that there should be a market for the budget airlines on this route, but if they don't fly it, your only choices are train, bus (look at http://www.eurolines.com or http://www.orangeways.com/en), or expensive flight.

If you haven't seen Vienna you should really lay over for a night or two and break up the trip.
