I am taking a train from Vienna to Budapest in March. Does it make sense to purchase my ticket now or should I buy it while I'm in Vienna.
I'd wait. And if you want to splurge, I'd consider the hydrofoil. We did that from Budapest to Bratislava (only stop on the Budapest-Vienna hydrofoil). It made a nice change from taking the train but was noticeably more expensive (€80 if I remember correctly in 2004).
If you book NOW by phoning the Austrian rail call center, you may still be able to get a SparSchiene fare of 19€. There are eight trains/day for which this fare is sold. See here: http://tinyurl.com/2zrvxt.
We did the train trip in Nov. Loved the views. You should really enjoy Budapest. We plan to return soon!!!!
Thank you all. Tim, I just booked the SparSchiene ticket and saved a bundle. Thank you for the tip.
Jim - did you book by calling the Call Center. Any language issues?
Thanks!
