Would you take a chance with a 1 hour 45 minute layover in Munich...flying US>Munich?>Italy on one ticket? We will have checked baggage and plenty of flights that you could catch to get you to Italy if you missed it. I'm more worried about the checked luggage situation; will it end up catching up with me on my next flight? I know this is more hypothetical and just trying to get risk opinions! Don't suggest carry on; it never works for us! We've done it. I'm in awe of you all who do, but I'm over it! I'm unapologetic even on Rick Steves tours now.
Checked luggage would be the least of your concerns in this situation. Since you are on one ticket, your luggage would automatically be loaded onto your connecting flight, unless your first flight is significantly delayed. Munich is very efficient with their operations, so 1 hr 45 min would generally be enough time, although I wouldn't waste any time before clearing Passport Control. Customs would be in Italy. If you do end up on a later flight, the airline will forward your checked bags.
Yep, 1.75 hours layover on one ticket is plenty of time in MUC, I take this route into & out of Schengen at least once a year. As mentioned above, I wouldn't linger after landing, head straight to immigration for entry into Schengen, then stop and look for your connecting flight. If for some reason you're delayed arriving, it is the responsibility of the carrier to get you where you're going.
Thanks! We’ve flown into Munich but only as a final destination and it was 7 years ago. So have no clue if passport control is decently managed. The other option is 5.5 hour layover which seems much.
I would stick with the 1 3/4 hour change time. Munich is very efficient in my experience.
I’ve done 40 and 45 minutes connections in Munich and it is easy barring something going awry. 1:45 is a lot of time to make a connection in MUC
Thank you everyone!
The only exception to everyone's advice might be if your connecting airline is
on a different alliance than your arriving airline. Terminal 2 in Munich is all
Star Alliance. Terminal 1 is everyone else. So if you are Lufthansa-Lufthansa
or United-Lufthansa, no problem. If you are British Airways-Lufthansa, for example,
then you need to walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. It would add 10-15 minutes
to your transit time, which is not lethal with 1:45 in general, but is still something
to be aware of.

When the OP says one ticket, I think it is safe to assume it is on partner airlines.
Yes. In fact I did this in reverse on Friday with an even shorter connection. I flew Bologna to Munich to Washington Dulles. My connection time was 1 hour and 25 minutes. My flight from Bologna to Munich landed on time and I had a brief wait as we waited for the bus to take us to the terminal (it was one of those planes where you deplane via stairs). I was at my gate 10 minutes before boarding started. I had a checked bag and it was on the plane (according to the United app) before I even got to the gate.
Munich is a really efficient airline for connections.
