Zagreb vs Ljubljana for flying into for the Best of the Adriatic tour.

I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to fly into Zagreb and spend a few days then take the train to Ljubljana for the start of the tour? I would like a few days to relax, wander and get over any jet lag I might have before starting the tour. Would I be missing something amazing if I skipped Zagreb? Thanks so much; always such great ideas on this forum. Regina

I didn't think Zagreb was a "to die for" destination, but I did enjoy it. For your stated purpose, I would do it. A bigger decision is where to fly out of at the end of the tour. For me, "Montenegro" is a wonderful destination, and the airport in Podgorica is 2 5 hours from Dubrovnik and well connected to some of the best of Montenegro.

I really like Zagreb. There is a very convenient bus transfer into town from the airport. If the flights there are more convenient than the ones to Ljubljana, then go for it. There are quirky museums and a beautiful church. I enjoyed the changing of the guard up on the hill. Easy to use transport system within the town. And depending on what time of year you go, there may be something going on in the big 7 block long park. When I was there one September, even in the pouring rain, there was a burger and brew fest - with lots of booths. Also, though, spend some extra time in Ljubljana because it's one of my favorite cities. Enjoy your tour!

It is probably easier to fly into Zagreb. Also Zagreb is very different from the cities along the coast Rick’s tour goes to. It will give you a well rounded view of the country.
You can take either a bus or train, the train is cheaper. The times are about the same - 2+ hours.
If you stay at the Esplanade Hotel or Hilton Zagreb, they are both within walking distance to the train station. Taxis are not too expensive though.
Unlike other cities, the area around the train station is very safe.

I took a Go Opti transfer from Zagreb to Ljubljana. Very convenient. Right to my hotel. And the further ahead that you book GoOpti, the cheaper it is.

Thanks everyone. Thanks to Mr E we have tentative plans for about two weeks post trip (flying home from Budapest) but needed a bit more information on what to do pre trip. Will probably fly into Zagreb and spend two nights, then two extra nights in Ljubljana. I liked the comment on how visiting Zagreb would give us a different perspective on Croatia considering what we will be seeing on the tour. Thanks again. Regina

Regina, thats excellent. Not sure what I did, but still excellent. I hope you enjoy Montenegro (mabye?) and Budapest as much as I do. In Zagreb if you get a guide for a half day you will get a lot more out of it. There is quite a bit there that isnt apparent. My time there was good laid back and relaxiing in a nice atmosphere.
