Where to stop over on Glacier Express?

My husband and I will be taking the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz and the Bernina Express down to Tirano. From Tirano we will take an Italian train to Varenna where we will stay for 6 nights. Our question is where should we stay overnight along the long ride from Zermatt to Tirano? Looking for suggestions. Thank you.

Get off in St-Moritz and travel by local train a short distance to the charming town of Pontresina. We loved staying in this town with its decorated buildings . We were glad we followed our friend’s advice to avoid staying in St-Moritz.

Pontresina is a good suggestion.

Here is the Glacier Express route with a list of stops:

If you cannot find a place you like in Pontresina, take a look at this little Garni in Samedan, the last stop before St. Moritz. Garni Laagers offers rooms and an apartment over a very nice bakery, where you get your breakfast (included in the room price). We spent two nights here a few years ago, before taking the train to Tirano.

You would need to take a train from Samedan the short distance to Pontresina the next day to board your Bernina Pass train.

Last summer I bicycle toured along much of the Glacier express route. Beautiful!

Brig is not at all a bad looking little city, and Andermatt is a fine mountain town. Either would be just fine. Also along that route I very much liked Visp. It (supposedly) has the highest vineyards in the world, and as such has the charm of a wine town. It's a bit of a walk up to those vineyards, but worth it. The traditional Hamlet up there is the quaintest, most beautiful tiny place I've seen in Europe.

Being an express, the train doesn't stop in little Visp of course, and probably not worth your time backtracking to get there.

Brig and Andermatt (and Visp) will come to early in your day though probably.

Chur is unremarkable. Nothing wrong with it but a bit of a contemporary industrial/commercial crossroads. There are better choices.

St. Moritz ... Is it so bad? The wealthy of the world seem to love it. Not not beautiful ... And you are already getting off the train there ...
