Love this Forum and the thoughtful responses and information we get from fellow travelers. We've signed up for a 2027 RS tour, our 7th, paid our deposit and we are wondering how soon or when is the best time to obtain travel insurance. We are both in our 70's but in good health and daily walkers. This trip includes our daughter, son-in law and two grandchildren. We are paying for the tour but not for their plane accommodations. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I would get it within the pre existing condition waiver window. Even if you don’t have any, these days you never know when a weather event, conflict, etc will become a known event and thus won’t be covered by travel insurance if you purchase after that.
The best time to buy travel insurance is within about two weeks of the first paid deposit. Many policies will only cover preexisting conditions this way.
Have a great time!
Because of my age I always buy travel insurance within the pre-existing conditions time limit. However, I only get enough coverage at that time to cover the money I've already spent (tour deposit, air, etc.) Then as time goes by and other major expenses come up (like final tour payments) I increase my coverage. I've never tested this with a claim, but the insurance companies have always happily increased the amount of my covereage with no comment. It's also a good way for me to budget my travel spending.
If you expect to take more than one trip during the year, you might consider an annual policy. We typically buy ours with a starting date coinciding with the first trip after the expiration of the prior year's policy.
