Planning on going in the Spring of 2015 on the Best of Venice, Florence and Rome 10 day tour. Possible dates are either mid to late March or early May due to work schedule. I was wondering if anyone could comment on differences. Crowds, Weather, Sites, festivals, etc. Planning on arriving early and staying a few days after. Also interested in any ideas for after the tour in Rome or nearby.
I did that tour in mid March last year and the weather was beautiful; only needed a light jacket occasionally. Crowds were minimal, in all three cities, and I didn't notice any closed sites. I'd opt for the March date if only because it's likely to be less crowded with tourists then.
Are you planning to stay in Italy for very long before and/or after the tour? That could make a bigger difference in choosing. The weather will probably be a lot better in May. With a guided tour, I don't know how much crowds would impact the trip.
Steve, we came a few days early, flew into Milan and stayed in Varenna on Lake Como. Late March -early April. Great weather and crowds not an issue. Saw everything we needed to see on the tour, as it was very comprehensive. Guide will always have suggestions for extras.
