My husband and I are registered for a RS tour of Paris later this year. But recent events here in the US have me concerned about how Americans will be received there or anywhere in Europe these days. Things really have taken an ugly turn since January 20, and I wouldn't blame Europeans for wanting nothing to do with American tourists. I'm even reluctant to travel now to nearby Canada. Anyone else feeling apprehensive? Any observations from travelers recently returned?
The only thing you need to be concerned about is pickpockets creating a diversion and stealing from you around the Sacre Coeur, the Eiffel Tower and in the metro.
No one will know you are an American (Paris attracts folks from countries all over the world ) or will care as long as you say at least Hello= Bonjour and Thank you = Merci and pay your bill. It's a big busy city. Generally in big cities all over the world people mind their own business. They don't look to talk to strangers. I was in Paris the first time when USA invaded Iraq and Afghanistan which France and Germany opposed and no one gave a hoot that I was American or could really tell.
We assume most people will know we are Americans when we travel abroad this summer but also trust that they will not automatically equate us with the current government. We will just behave as our usual selves and be respectful tourists.
If you take any guided tours or activities like wine tasting you’ll get to talk to people more than if you just go about your business. I’d definitely be prepared for the subject to come up and robust views may be expressed, but nobody will hold you personally to account.
There is currently a live war in Europe so people really do care about what’s happening, as you can imagine.
Simple answer; no
Forget politics.
In the last few absolutely similar posts i have said, and will say again; I am an American, I live in Europe, I travel in Europe, I have even been in the European country most mentioned in American news since the election. I have friends and associates and neighbors in Europe, and i spend almost every day out of the house in areas where i am known and In 6 months, I have been asked once. It was a 3-minute conversation.

You do realize that "Europe" is not completely and universally opposed to what is happening in the US? You stand a great possibility of finding yourself in a sticky situation of you think like that.
So, unless you want to take the time to understand the political forces in each and every country you are visiting, probably best not to wear your politics on your sleeve and avoid the questions or end them in a neutral fashion if the very rare occasion does arise.
This will give you some idea who you might be talking to https://www.rosalux.de/en/news/id/51006/the-far-right-in-the-european-parliament

You are always welcome in Canada, neighbour!
Thank you.
I hope you always feel welcome here too, although I understand those who don't want to spend their money here right now.
