Travelling by train from MXP airport to Varenna

You can take the train - on the Trenitalia website, it shows some routes with one change, and some with two, presumably, you’ll want to choose a route with one change, the change happening at the Milano Centrale train station. The types of trains involved do not need to be reserved in advance.

Agree with advice above. Last year we made this journey, changing at Milano Centrale, and had no problems.

Coming off a long international flight by way of San Francisco and Frankfurt we booked a town car thru our hotel in Varenna. I think it was 50 euros. It was a lot easier than taking the train to Milan and then waiting to catch the train to Varenna.

Hello there! A friend and I took the train as you are describing. It was very easy. The only thing I’d say is if you have a later flight coming in, if you have delays you may run into trouble. We had a long delay out of Seattle, which made us miss our connection, then a delay in Amsterdam, getting us in late. We were lucky and got on the very last train of the night going to Varenna. This is the only concern I would have. Have fun! Beautiful part of the world!
