Travel insurance: Allianz, Travelguard, Trawick Advice

Hello everyone,

Six of us signed up for a trip in 2027 to Central Europe/21 days. What advice do you have for traveler insurance companies/plans. I did some research and it appears that Travelguard and Allianz were similiar in cost. Trawick (via AARDY person I spoke with) was at least $150 less. I am just looking to cover the tour cost $6000, with standard options like illness, injury or death of myself before or during the trip, and my companions. Appreciate any advice. I tried using squaremouth and found their quotes/tool showing very high prices compared to AARDY. Hopefully I never have to use it on the trip!

Not sure how helpful this is but I have been using AARDY consolidator for comparing and purchasing travel insturance for a number of years. I have found their prices a little better than other sources and I have found their staff helpful when I have had questions about specific options. I mainly am interested of the medical coverage. Fortunately, I have not yet ever needed to file any claims -- which would be with the insurance company not AARDY anyway.

Thx. I’m leaning towards ALLIANZ because on several of the forums, people said it was easy to work with them to file a claim. Mixed challenges on the other two from people on the forums. I used Travrlex years ago when I was supposed to go on a cruise and one of the travelers got sick I remember we got our money back right away, but now they are double the cost of other carriers

I buy travel insurance through my auto / home insurer, USAA. I noticed COSTCO sells it too, but I haven’t checked their prices and coverage. Haven’t had to make a claim. Knock wood.

On Costco, from what I saw, you have to have bought the trip from Costco in order to use their insurance FYI.

We have an annual Allianz policy and last year had to file a claim. It was paid promptly.

Kathy--we normally do annual plans through DAN, but last summer due to timing of the annual plans, we did a one trip coverage through USAA with their partner Travel Insured International. We did have to file a claim and I was not pleased with the process. Many stalling tactics, despite the fact that I provided everything to them the first time around. This is a partner of USAA, so not USAA themselves, and in our experience, they did not live up to USAA's standards. After that we bought an annual policy through Allianz. The comparison between the USAA partner and Allianz did surprise me as Allianz was much better. Our claim was for baggage delay and the USAA partner only covered up to $300 but the Allianz policy was up to $2000 for the same coverage. We have not made a claim through Allianz, so I cannot speak to that, but I would not recommend the USAA partner after our experience.

I insure my trips with Allianz, and highly recommend them. I am a AAA member, so I get a better rate. I had to file my first claim when Virgin cancelled my flight (due to technical reasons) on Dec. 21, 2025. My claim was completed and payment processed within a couple weeks. I was very pleased how quick and easy the process was. I have another trip planned to Scotland in June and will insure with Allianz again.

Happy Travels!

We use Travel Guard. Each time I filed a claim they responded quickly and paid the amount covered by the Travel Guard policy. Never have had any hassles. Highly recommend Travel Guard!

Hi, I've purchased with John Hancock travel for my most recent trips. I haven't yet had to make a claim (and probably just jinxed myself by typing that!), so I cannot speak to the claim customer service.

We have used Aardy ( https://www.aardy.com ) for four years. When compared to other offers we found it cost effective. It is helpful to view in one place coverage from different insurance companies. They also include different levels of coverage, allowing you to choose what is important for your needs.

mikliz97, I hate to hear that about USAA’s travel insurance partner. USAA should choose better than that! Thanks for the heads up.

Actually, you do not have to book your travel through Costco in order to buy travel insurance through their partner "Cover-More", which is a company of Zurich. I am going to be purchasing a travel policy through them later today for an upcoming, totally self-planned trip to Japan. I read somewhere that their rates are less expensive since they don't take into account the age of the insured, which for those of us 55+, can save some money.

Kathy—I did tell the insurance company that this is not what I have come to expect from anyone who is an affiliated with USAA. I don’t expect perfection, but they repeatedly dropped the ball and the stalling was on several occasions.
