At the end of our My Way Italy tour in September, we are spending a couple of days on our own exploring the area of Orvieto, traveling by train. We would like to visit the hill-top village of Civita di Bagnoregio for a half-day, which I know is close to Orvieto, but I think it’s rather difficult to get there without a car. Other than taking a taxi, which I heard was costly and especially difficult getting the return trip, I am wondering about a car service or Uber? I don't believe a bus is an option. Any recommendations, or perhaps a driver you may know?
The Rick Steves Italy guidebook has three pages on options for getting to and from Civita di Bagnoregio.
We took a bus to the town of Bagnoregio from Orvieto, then it's a short walk to the hilltop town. You can ask your hotel or your guide in Orvieto to give you directions to where the bus leaves from. It was easy once we knew where to go, got our bus tickets, and found the parking area where the buses leave from.
Be careful about day of the week and any holiday during the time you'll be in Orvieto. Bus schedules can be very day-specific. Sometimes it matters whether schools are in session or not, though I don't know why that would be the case for a bus between Orvieto and Bagnoregio.
The tourist office in Orvieto was very helpful when I visited the town back in 2015, so you might seek advice there. There used to be a branch near the bottom of the funicular as well as a branch in the historic center.
My husband and I were in Orvieto this past October and actually arranged for a taxi service to take us. They picked us up by the Duomo, dropped us off just a short walk from the bridge to Civita. We had a great visit, had lunch, and then just texted them when we were ready to return and they picked us up. All for 100 euros.
