The instructions I received for getting to the start of the Switzerland tour say there are direct trains on this route. I bought a ticket on the SBB app, and all of the trains show a change in Zurich. Surely the app would show all trains?
There are no direct trains from the airport to Luzern on the current schedule. There is a construction detour or something going on, so you have to change trains at the Zurich Hauptbahnhof.

I wil be taking the RS Switz. tour in late August and am also looking into the train transfers from the airport to Lucerne.
Taking the train from Zurich Airport to Luzern is trivial. Just get a ticket, and take the next train. And yes, currently there are not direct trains as one of the lines from the airport to the main station is currently closed for reconstruction. But that doesn't matter. Just look up the schedule on www.sbb.ch, and follow that.
You do not need to buy your tickets in advance. I bought when I arrived at the train station using my SBB app and apple pay or you can pre-key in your credit card. I just return on June 14th if you have questions.
I arrived on Saturday, and bought my ticket on the app before the trip. Hopped on the first train that fit my schedule.
