Tour of southern Italy and fear of heights

I have a healthy fear of heights. Will I have trouble in Matera? Amalfi coast? Guess I can keep my eyes closed though I think the tour lodges in a cave house. Thoughts?

You will have to be more specific. Can you ride along a cliff-side in a bus for example?
If you watch the Netflix series "Ripley" you can see how the bus ride along the Amalfi Coast is--and although set decades ago, it did not seem that different from what I experienced this decade.

Recently returned from this exact trip. Matera should not be an issue. Most of the city is surrounded by buildings, no exposure, although lots of stairs. The cave hotel is set down in the old town. No issue. The walking tour will take you over to where you can see across the valley, but you are on firm ground and don’t have to get up close. Our overnight on the Amalfi coast was in Maiori. We arrived by boat from Sorrento. We did have a drive of about an hour leaving Maiori that was along the road with some spectacular views down. My advice would be to sit on the driver’s side of the bus if that view would bother you. The only other semi- hair raising drive was out of Vieste. That was a detour from the usual route due to construction.

I agree that height issues vary.

I dislike being in vehicles on roads with drop offs. The Amalfi coadt drive on the tour wasn't too concerning to me because there weren't many hairpin turns.

There really aren't height issues in Matera unless you have issues with balconies on buildings, and in Matera there is solid ground under the paths/overlooks and a solid low wall at the edge. Once you are in Matera, the refurbished hotel areas are pretty different than the idea of a cave you might have.

Thank you fellow travelers. I think I’ll be okay but thanks for the detailed response. On southwest England tour, I couldn’t go up the scaffolding on Canterbury cathedral, nor stand on the edge of cliffs of Dover. That kind of heights fun. Thanks again!

Patty, nothing like those on the South Italy tour. There are a couple of viewpoints you might want to avoid, but that's all.

Patty, you won't have problems with heights on the South of Italy tour. I'm afraid of heights and easily get car sick. Some of the tour stays have changed since I took the tour in 2019 (my first RS tour; taking number 5 in two months).

In and out of Amalfi coast, sit on the land side of the bus if you're uncertain. But I felt safe on either side. Take Dramamine if you get even slightly queasy from curvy roads. On our free time in Sorrento, I didn't go to Capri. Weather was blustery and I had shopping to do.
If you are interested in cameo jewelry, I can recommend https://www.bimontesorrento.com/ It's better quality than most of the "tourist" cameos.
There is nothing scary in Matera. The history is amazing.
Enjoy your tour. It's great!
