what type of shoes ?Are waterproof tennis shoes appropriate?I will be there oct 11 thru oct 23

It depends what you are planning to do? Will you be staying in towns and cities or will you be walking in the countryside?
Waterproof definitely and with good grip are definitely necessary what ever your plans.

I wore a pair of Brooks Ghost GTX, they were great on wet cobblestones.

As others have said, it depends on what you want to do.

If you are hiking across the West Highland Way, then you will need to pack appropriately.

If you are staying in cities and towns, then Edinburgh has significantly less rain than either NYC, Chicago or Seattle. Brits don't worry about footwear on a day to day basis, wear "normal" shoes wherever they go. If it rains you go inside for a bit.

Just to add, we were in Glasgow and Edinburgh in May and I’m very happy I took my Ghosts because it did rain several days, not all day long but periodic cloud bursts.
