Salerno is our home base. We will be there 10/6-10/13. We will have 4 days for day trips. We are on a budget also. We want to have a couple days just to roam around. What would you suggest we see considering only 4 days. We know we want to take a boat to somewhere so we can view the Almafi Coast. We don't know which tour to take from the boat and what other city to tour. Do you suggest train, bus or boat other city tours?
Here’s the website for the Travelmar ferries, which leave from the Marina in Salerno (close to the main train station), and have lots of stops along the Amalfi Coast. https://www.travelmar.it/en/index
It should give you plenty of ideas.
Have you been to the area before, and/or will you spend time in any others nearby places on this trip? I am curious what the other three days are devoted to.
Paestum's Greek Temples are an easy train trip.
On the first good weather day, hop on the ferries.
If you have extra time and interest in pottery, hop on bus or train to Vietri. Or bus to Cetara and buy colatura.
I just did a little playing around on the website for Travelmar. It looks like the last day that they operate ferries this year is Oct. 13. Take that into account in your planning. It's likely that all ferry service will end that weekend. And note that if the weather is bad, the ferries don't run.
There are many things to see in Naples, and there are many trains each day that make the trip in 35 to 50 minutes
Chani, do you mind sharing how you find the ferry end date? I have searched the Travelmar website trying to find that in vain. Do you have to search the specific schedules by date to find out? I had a feeling it could end in mid to late October, but it would he nice to be able to tell people how to determine the expected end date--thanks!
Going to Paestum from Salerno is a great idea. There are also buffalo mozzarella farms in that area that sound fun to visit - perhaps the people running your Salerno accommodations could help you find a tour.
From Salerno, is it feasable to take a day trip to more than one city on the same day? I am planning this on my own. First time and not sure how you want to spend in long one town. I we k now wewant to see Pompei, Capri, Almafi and Ravello for starters, after that I really don't know. We are spending 9 days and want a few days in Salerno. Don't know if Sorrento is worth visiting. I am booking all tours on Viator and want to get something lined up and then we will check weather a couple days before to see if the Ferry is an option. I am pretty overwhelmed, but I think with pointers from others I can make it work.
These are not cities, they are small villages. You could see Amalfi and Ravello on one day, maybe Positano and something else another day. Be sure to check the ferry schedules.
Pompeii and Capri are full days.
I think you need to clarify the itinerary with details for better help.
if you’re in Salerno, don’t miss Paestum. Hire the guide (Sylvia) in the Rick Steves book. She can also help arrange a visit to a mozzarella farm/factory. Great day.
Do make sure you have a ferry and bus schedules that cover mid October. If it is not available yet for 2024, you might be able to find the 2023 schedule, and hope it has similar dates. Note that the SITA bus (your ferry backup) requires a change of bus in Amalfi when going further east or west. There are no trains along the Amalfi Coast. Make sure there are ferries to Capri for your dates if that is on your list. I doubt that advance purchase is necessary for October from Salerno. But Sorrento might still be busy. Some seasonal businesses may start to close in October.
