We are excited to be going on the RS Best of Central Europe tour in 2025, and our thought was to add on a few days in southern Croatia at the end. However, traveling from Ljubljana to Split or Dubrovnik looks pretty difficult. Has anyone added on Croatia travel after this tour? I'm starting to think we need to scrap the Croatia idea. Thanks for any insight!
The easiest way would probably be to fly from Ljubljana to Dubrovnik. After we did that tour some of us ended in Venice, and others in London. You could really go anywhere you want with a flight within Europe.
My husband and I will be going on that tour next spring! I went on it about 16 years ago with my (then teenage) son. It was wonderful! We will be flying out of Ljubljana on Air Serbia to Belgrade, then to Tirana, Albania for a few days. Many other locations we considered required a full day of travel and we wanted to see a new place. This probably didn't answer your questions, but best of luck and happy traveling!
Yeah, flying would be your best option to get to Dubrovnik. You don’t want to rent a car in Slovenia to drop off in Croatia, too expensive.
You could easily take a bus or train to Zagreb for 2 nights and from there rent a car, stopping in Plitvice Lakes along the way. Depending on how much time you have, you could then drive to Split, drop the car, ferry to Dubrovnik or add in an island such as Hvar or Korčula in between. Easy ferry connections. Then fly home from Dubrovnik.
If time is limited, fly home from Split.
We did this tour summer of 2023 and loved it! Some of our tour members took a bus to Dubrovnik, not sure which company though. I remember the bus routed through Zagreb, making the trip longer than necessary. Maybe you could rent a car?
If you're not set on heading south, maybe stay in Slovenia instead. It's a beautiful country and the roads aren't difficult to navigate.
We took a 3 hour Flix bus ride to Venice and stayed there for a couple nights before taking the AVE to Rome and picking up the Heart of Italy tour.
You don’t want to rent a car in Slovenia and drop it off in Croatia because of the high drop off fee. Picking up a car in one country and dropping it off in another is costly.
I don't see nonstop flights from Ljubljana to Croatia. Consider taking a train from Ljubljana to Zagreb which was a wonderful surprise. From Zagreb you can take a train to Split or fly to Dubrovnik.
We’re on our last tour day today (Bled). It’s our first RS tour and it’s been a blast. Having a little down time right now before dinner and came into the site to find another tour!
I would fly from Ljbujiana to Dubrovnik. We’re sharing a taxi from Bled to Ljbujiana for $90 (1 hour, split 2 ways), so transfer is not that expensive. I’m sure the airport has even cheaper options.
Have fun!
