Advice Please for after the RS 7 Days in Rome tour with 3 additional days

Hi Fellow Travelers,
My RS tour will end on Sat. 4/01 and I booked my return flight for Tues 4/04 which means I have 3 additional nights.

My idea was to go to Naples and see the Archaeological Museum with the artifacts from Pompeii then go to Pompeii itself. I have heard this is a good way to learn more about Pompeii. Do I have enough time to also take in Herculaneum?

I was planning to go directly to Naples after the tour ends, spend 2 nights there. Should I take the train?
And the third night I would need to be back in Rome for my flight home on Tues. 4/04.

Several questions: What hotel to book for Naples? Being a single female traveler, I need to be in a safe neighborhood. Any suggestions for private tour guides to Pompeii?

Then, what hotel to stay in near the airport in Rome?

Thanks,
Judy B

We found the Chiaia area near tne waterfront to be safe and liked our hotel very much, Palazzo Alabadieri. It was a snort walk to the lungomare and good restaurants were everywhere.

Yes, do take the train between Rome and Naples. There are many direct trains running, with the fastest taking about an hour. You can reserve now at www.trenitalia.com if you want to shave the fare down from about 44 to 30 euros each. All the fares are laid out on a grid. Otherwise, there's no deadline to buy a ticket.

Thanks, Suki. It looks like a lovely hotel, unfortunately they are booked April 1st and I need both nights, April 1st and 2nd in Naples. I will look at hotels Rick mentions in his Naples guidebook.

April 3rd I need to be back in Rome for my flight home on Tues. the 4th.

Thanks, Laura. Do I take the train from Termini in Rome? Also, should I go back to the tour hotel, Lancelot, for my flight home on April 4th? From FCO?

Another alternative would be to stay in Sorrento instead of Naples. We did this when we visited Pompeii in 2008. There is a local train called the Circumvesuviana that runs from the main Naples train station to Sorrento. The local train also stops at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Sorrento is quite safe and laid back.

Thanks, Bob. I will look at that option. I have heard from a friend who did that and really enjoyed Sorrento.

I travel solo almost all the time. There is a nice hotel across the street from the train station in Napoli, I stayed there two years ago when my preferred B&B was full. It's StarHotel Terminus. You can easily take the metro to the Museo stop, and back again. The Chiaia district is also very nice.

The on-site tour guides are very good, you really don't need to pay a lot more for a private guide, the last time I hired a guide on-site there were three people in the group.

You can take the train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, it's about 1.25 hours. Even if you spend the last night in central Roma rather than at the airport, a taxi to the airport will have a flat fee of 45Euro or so, about 55Euro for a private transfer.

Zoe,
Thanks! This is perfect. I will contact the StarHotel Terminus you reference and book a room. You mention on-site tour guides at Pompeii, reservations are not required? You just walk up and sign up for the next guide?

Also, for the hotel in Rome for my last night, I will just book with the tour hotel then. Then take a taxi to the airport - I did that in October at the end of the RS tour.

Any recs for restaurants?

Thanks,
Judy B
