I am taking the RS Rome tour in March 2026. (I haven't been to Rome since 1980.) Is adding 1 or 2 nights at the end of the tour over kill?
Not in my estimation and especially if you aren't arriving x nights earlier than tour start. Depending on budget and time constraints, if you can linger longer, do it. I say get yourself a personal guide and take in the Baths of Caracalla or visit St Peter's Basilica with Rick in your ear, using his audio guide Europe app. Rome has so many, many diversions! Have a fantastic trip.
Suggestion: Go thru the RS guidebook and make a list of the sites you would like to see. Go thru your tour itinerary to see what the tour includes. Determine whether there’s time to see the sites on the tour not listed, on your free afternoons. That should give you an idea of whether a few more days is needed for what you would like to include. I loved our times in Rome. Have a great time!
I arrived one day early and stayed 2 or 3 days post tour, for 2 nights in Naples. I had to explore Pompeii as well. There is so much to do in Rome and environs, I would definitely recommend staying longer if it is feasible. This is a wonderful tour of an absolutely fascinating city! Be sure to read the Rome guidebook for ideas that pique your interest.
There is so much to see and there may be stuff not part of the tour that interests you. Maybe a food tour in trastevere? I always want more Rome?
I would add days both before and after the tour. You have made the huge effort and paid for trans-Atlantic flights. Get more value by adding days both before and after your trip to Rome
You can see places other than Rome that are nearby such as Tivoli, Castel Gandolfo or Ostia Antica.
We arrived several days early, and stayed almost a week after the tour! There is so much to see and do.
Chances are excellent that you will want to return to some of the places the tour visited, as well.
"Roma, non basta una vita" translates to "Rome, one lifetime is not enough".
There’s some nice day trips from Rome, although I like to stay overnight at these, too.
Caserta has the gorgeous Reggia Caserta. It’s a 1-hour fast train from Roma Termini. Excellent pizza in that town too.
Tivoli has the beautiful Villa d’Este gardens & Hadrian’s ruins, plus Tivoli itself is nice. Another 1-hour direct train at certain times of the day. B&B Regina has one of the most hospitable hosts I’ve ever experienced, if you would like an overnight there.
I like Rome but would personally be wanting a break outside the city.
I think it would be great to add some nights at the end of the tour, whether you do sightseeing or not, just relax and enjoy Rome! We spent almost 3 weeks in Rome last fall and did not see everything.
Thanks tons, everyone. I will be coming from a week in Spain and so I won't be jet lagged at beginning of the Rome tour. You all have convinced me to add on at least 2 days at the tour end.
Jealous! Buon viaggio
I plan to take a day trip to Orvieto (I'm a cathedral "collector") and Hadrian's Villa / Villa d'Este also.
Orvieto is a fantastic day trip, you will love the cathedral there. Also, the Etruscan Museum is very interesting and right across from the Cathedral. Enjoy.
