A friend and I are debating Road Scholar Best of the Balkans: and Rick’s Best of the Balkans. For those who have taken these trips what was the best and least favorite part. I have taken tours with both company’s before. If I did the Road S tour I would skip the second day in Split and go to Plitvice Lakes National Park.
I have taken neither tour but want to warn you that a day trip to Plitvice is a bad idea. The park gets totally swamped with daytrippers, and the severe crowding seriously degrades the experience. The only way I recommend visiting is with an afternoon arrival (with some time in the park), an overnight stay in the area, and some more park time early in the morning.
@acraven Thank you for you advice. My plan is not to go with a big bus group from split to Plitvice Lakes National Park but a private guide and get there at 7:30am. This way we can beat the crowds.
Hi L F, I was on the RS Adriatic tour last summer and it was fantastic. We had a great guide in Sanel, and he got us into Plitvice early and started from the end of the lakes so missed the crowds (and there’s a lot of people).
You won’t regret taking the RS tour but I haven’t been on the other so can’t help there.
Have a great trip whichever you choose.
Cheryl
We finished the RS tour with Sanel yesterday, and highly recommend it. To be honest, Plitvice Lakes National Park wasn't as beautiful as I was expecting it to be. We started at 8, and the last half was just spent battling the crowds.
