A friend and I are going on the Alpine Europe my way tour in September 2026 and are wondering if we need to pre-book any of the recommended activities during the tour. Also, we are wondering how easy it is to plan and get to the various activities. We have only done the other Rick Steves tours where everything is planned for you.
It's a wonderful tour! (I went early June 2024.) I booked a timed entry ticket for Bolzano to see the Iceman and his museum. I checked with the RS office because it wasn't clear if there'd be time on the arrival day. Fortunately the hotel was only about a 5 minute walk from it and I was able to prior to closing (it's wonderful, and not very large). The tickets weren't released to book until ? months ahead. It's on the website.
I also pre-booked a mid-day small Mozart performance on historic pianos but can't remember where that was - not the fortress option- also online. That, too, was easy to get to, right in the center of the Old Town.
In both cases it wasn't necessary, not very crowded. But if it's something you really want to see or experience, you could do the same.
In Chamonix those who were going to the summit area and etc booked on arrival (for the next day). Again, a short walk from the hotel. I wasn't interested so didn't pay much attention, but it's because of uncertainty about weather and conditions. The few who went (despite the blizzard up there!) were thrilled so maybe you can ask that question separately to get opinions from those who've gone.
As far as the castles, I didn't opt for the interior tours. Again, you might read reviews to help you decide. The tour bus delivers you to the access point to then use a shuttle or walk.
I don't remember others?
You will love the tour!
Thank you so much for the information!
Neuschwanstein Castle.
Sorry, hit the send button early on previous response. We did the My Way Alpine tour last month and it was GREAT. The only place you really NEED reservations for is the Neuschwanstein Castle and only if you want to go inside. The Neuschwanstein Castle is great to just look at from the outside - it is the Castle that Walt Disney used to make his Magic Kingdom/Disney World Castles. The best view of the Castle is from Mary's Bridge, above the Castle. If you go to Mary's bridge, go early in the day because it gets crowded later in the day. We went in the afternoon and it was uncomfortably crowded. Some of our group went first thing in the morning and they said they had the bridge to themselves. If you want to see the inside of Neuschwanstein Castle, you should make a reservation before you go and probably as soon as you can, as it does sell out in advance. We toured the nearby Hohenstein Castle because of its superior history - if you like history you should strongly consider the Hohenstein. We like to do as much as we can before we leave so we made advance reservations for Hohenstein before we left, but don't think we really needed to - it wasn't crowded at all. If you want to see Eagles Nest, you might consider an advance reservation. We did Eagles Nest on our own and loved it, but the bus connections from Salzburg are tricky, and if we ever do it again we will book a tour. Eagles Nest is pretty much a must see for anyone interested in WWII history. A few other bits of advice from our tour - 1) When in Salzburg, you are almost obligated to hear some Mozart music. While you can do expensive Mozart concerts, some with expensive dinners included, we opted for the Mozart Piano Sonata at historic St. Peter's Abbey for about $20 Euro's each. Two young musicians, one piano and one violin, playing 45 minutes of Mozart music in a small room with good acoustics for 45 minutes. It was a good, no frills event and the music was great. If you want to consider doing it, the website is www.agenturorpheus.at. 2) In Chamonix you should consider buying a Mt. Blanc pass. It gives you unlimited access attractions like Aiguille du Midi gondola to Mt. Blanc, the Brevent Gondola, the Flegere lift, the Mer de Glace train and others. It is a great buy if you plan to ride a lot of lifts. We went to up to Mt. Blanc twice during our stay in Chamonix, something we never would have done without having the Mt. Blanc pass. We bought our pass online in advance for convenience, but you can also buy it when you get there at the Aiguille du Midi lift station. 3) If you have any motion sickness, this tour has a lot of windy roads and sharp turns so talk to your tour guide about sitting up in front of the bus. My wife did not wear her patch prescription that she usually wears on plane and boat trips and she paid the price one day. Your tour guide should be able to get you in the front part of the bus if you ask. Hope that helps some. You are in for a GREAT trip! Enjoy!
Oh . . . revision on the earlier post . . . not sure where the brain cramp came from but the historical castle near Fussen is the Hohenschwangau. Totally my bad. Enjoy the trip
I went on this tour in September 2023 and had a ball! We lucked out and had wonderful sunny weather which is great for the mountain scenery.
I arrived 3 days early to Salzburg and went to the Eagles Nest using the tricky bus connections SC traveler mentioned so I suggest booking a tour instead. Less stressful.
I agree also about the Mozart concerts, I attended 2 and I’m not sure where but they weren’t expensive. Totally delightful music.
If you are interested in Christmas, go to the amazing Christmas Museum or the Weihnachtsmuzeum in the Old Town, it’s in the Alpine Tour guidebook you will get from RS. It’s a marvelous collection of German toys, decorative items and vignettes gifted by a woman who accumulated them over her lifetime. It gives visitors a picture of Christmas celebrated in the past.
Also, I spent 4 hours at Hellbrunn a bus ride outside Salzburg in a suburb, a gorgeous palace built for a Prince-Archbishop with trick fountains and grottoes surrounded by beautifully groomed gardens and palace interiors filled with art. The trick fountains are timed to spray water during the day. I happened to arrive just before 11 am when they started going off! Very refreshing on a warm day. Imagine what the Prince’s guests experienced in their fine silk dresses in 1615. There is a nice cafe on the grounds as well as the gazebo seen in the Sound of Music film. I ate a relaxing lunch outside and enjoyed myself. Took the bus back to town and walked to the hotel. Salzburg is very walkable, one of my favorites in Europe.
