We plan on several days based in Plymouth and we hope to allow time to visit Seven Sisters Cliffs and the surrounding area. What is the best method of seeing the area? We are relying on public transportation. Is it best to take train to Brighton, or a more direct route? Thanks for your help.
It’s a very very long way from Plymouth so I hope you’re not thinking of this as a day trip. Plymouth is close to some of the most beautiful coastline in the UK - Cornwall to the west, the South Hams area of Devon to the east - and both of these are accessible by bus or train from Plymouth. Also to my money they’re more attractive than Seven Sisters.
The Seven Sisters work from a Brighton base, so if you’re planning a two-centre holiday, make Brighton your second base.
However, to get from Plymouth to Brighton by train it’s at least five hours via London each way.
(Just checking that you really do mean Plymouth: a lot of people, including Brits, get Plymouth and Portsmouth mixed up. From Portsmouth Seven Sisters are a bit more accessible.)
Yes, in my rush, I typed the wrong city name.. I will be in PORTSMOUTH, not Plymouth. My error, but I appreciate your help.
Yes, there is a direct train every hour from Portsmouth to Brighton which takes 1 hour 21 minutes. Then the frequent bus service heading for Eastbourne.

Ah, I’m glad I queried. You’re not the first person to make that mistake!
Thanks for the reply. How near the Cliffs does the Eastbourne bus take us? Can we walk to the cliffs or will we need a car service?
The 12/12X/13X high frequency bus services from Brighton Station take you to the Seven Sisters Country Park Centre- https://www.buses.co.uk/services
That is as close as anyone can park, it is just a very short walk from there to the cliffs.
There is also the hourly #701 bus (run by Stagecoach) but that starts in Brighton City Centre at the Old Steine (traditionally where all buses in Brighton started from) so that makes little sense for you.
Thanks so much! Excited to see the cliffs.
