More specifically, I was wondering what the weather is like in the Lauterbrunnen area in early October? What are the chances of snowfall at this time?

We’ve been there twice in October; once early and once mid-Month. We ascended at Grutschalp early one AM to find clear weather with an inch-or-so of snow on the trail to Murren. Otherwise, no snow, and I think only one true day of rain that limited our activity just a bit. Do bring layers. I once had to buy a wool base layer in Zermatt in September because of an unusual cold snap that made higher elevations uncomfortable, but by the afternoons I was eating outdoors in a tee shirt,
