I am wondering why on a My Way tour you do not get all of the hotel names and locations until 30 days before. By that time you may not be able to make a restaurant reservation at a popular restaurant you are interested in going to. Also if you have to pay 60 days in advance then why not give the hotels names 60 days in advance. It doesn't make sense to me, we are paying a lot of money to find out 30 days before
Most restaurants won't need to be reserved 2 months ahead, and you know the towns you will be in, so if you need to reserve way ahead you can always take a taxi.
BTW, this is how all Rick Steves tours work.
LIZinPA, for the My Way Alps tour, you do not know all the towns ahead of time. From the tour itinerary:
Sleep near the South Tyrol area
Sleep in or near Füssen
Sleep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley
dstoch, it looks like you'll be on the My Way Alps tour. I'm taking that tour in September.
I agree that it would be helpful to have more advance notice, especially for the Dolomites, but that's the way all of Rick's tours operate. I've never heard of any issues with dinner reservations, so I think you'll be fine.
Enjoy the tour! This will be my first Rick Steves tour, and I'm really looking forward to it.
Thanks for clarifying, Carrie.
No I don’t know the exact towns
We did My Way Alpine last year. I had asked one of the staff at the Rick Steves Travel Center about this, and she was able to provide me the names of the hotels that were used in prior tours - but certainly no guarantees. But I agree with another poster, I do NOT think dinner reservations will be an issue.
I have to agree, there really doesn’t seem to be a good reason for keeping these “hush-hush.” I’ve gone on enough RS tours to know they contract for the hotels at least a year in advance. Other tour companies get around fall out from last minute changes by saying , “Hotel XXX or similar “. Strangely enough the only tour company that has ever changed me from the stated tour hotel is RS Europe. Those changes have only happened when the regular tour hotel did not have enough rooms due to high number of solo travelers on tour. Then, we solo travelers were walked to a nearby alternate hotel.
