My Way Alps Sept 4-15. 2024

Hello!
We are set to go on the My Way Alps Tour starting Sept 4. We are quite excited and wondering if anyone out there is also going on this tour.
In Salzburg, we hope to go to Konigsee for the full boat trip and walk to the waterfall. We like to hike and hope to do plenty of that in the Alps.
Here’s hoping for great weather and a wonderful trip!

The Konigsee is absolutely beautiful, and do walk to the waterfall. I'd suggest going early, for some spectacular pix without anyone spoiling your frame.
Are you interested in touring the salt mine, which is on the way from Salzburg to the lake? Enjoy- you're in store for some incredible scenery. Safe travels!

We are going on My Way Alpine in June, 2025. SO will be thrilled to hear about your adventure and important thigs we should NOT miss!
Where are you flying in to? We will fly into Vienna. I'm thinking of trying to get to Hallstatt the day before getting to Salzburg to meet up with the tour group at 5:00 pm. Have you explored getting to Hallstatt?

I am also looking forward to our trip June of 2025. I wonder about food tours - maybe in South Tyrol? Hang gliding in Chamonix? Seeing a lot of waterfalls and gorgeous scenery. We will go to Annecy at the end of the tour. Does anyone have suggestions of places to stay in Annecy? Barbara

Hi Jeanbill:

So happy to hear you have Konigsee on your radar for Salzburg! I was on My way tour in 2023, solo, and I planned that day trip on Day 2. I highly recommend the very earliest bus. It’s at 6:30 near Mirabell palace, so a bit of a walk if you’re at Hotel Hofwirt. If you ask the hotel in advance, they’ll pack you a breakfast bag. They were awfully kind to make a vegan bag for me. BUT Take your own paper coffee cup and lid from home (I brought one in suitcase from Peet’s) so you can take your espresso with you ( they are green, so only have mugs there)… unless you wake up earlier of course.

Buy your bus day ticket online if you can and take a screenshot of it just in case. It’s pretty easy to find and plan on-line. After the first leg, You’ll transfer bus at the main stop at Berchtesgaden for the final leg to Konigsee. Several school children got in our bus so that was fun to experience since I’m a teacher. Anyway, the water may bloom smoky- foggy and almost mystical if it’s a similar morning. The water is like glass! The boats are silent. I rec going to the second stop, and hiking around that smaller lake to the waterfall… but wear good shoes bc the smaller lake was super rocky, sometimes slippery and rough patches, with ropes for rails in parts. Trail tennis shoes worked okay for me. Then a hike past cows to waterfall. There, you can enjoy some of your breakfast bag and savor your reward. Cool waterfalls! (That day was upper 90’s! Mid-June.) Then after you boat back to shore, you could walk over to the Jenner Lift. It was too hot to hike, but the cafe up there had a nice vegan streudel dish and salad, overlooking the valley. On the way home, catch the bus near parking lot at Jenner back to B-gadwn. Our bus had to stop on the highway to let a family of DUCKS cross the busy road.

I was back to Salzburg by 5ish, in time to freshen up and find a bite to eat. We had thunder and lightning later that night. I’m sure you’ll take the rain jacket, umbrella, hats, sunscreen, etc. On the morning of day 1, I went on the Frau Maria bike tour. That was a blast, even tho I’m not that much of a SOM fan. Others did the same, I found out later.

I wanted to share this bc someone shared it with us on the Facebook group. Her pictures convinced me to seek out Konigsee. I hope you share your adventures when you return. You’ll have wonderful memories.

PS: even tho it’s a my way tour, there are a few happy hours that the tour mgr will set up for those interested. We had a what’s app group chat to share news or invites. That was so helpful.
Some people made connections and explored or dined together. Like, one gal and I rode bikes out to the luge in Füssen, another walked with me after dinner to a waterfall after dinner in Füssen just before it got dark, after we saw someone’s photo of it at dinner! We’d see each other on trails or at gelato shops.

Take your swimsuit for floating the Saline baths in Füssen… while viewing the castles up on the hills!

If you want a preview of the Swiss hiking opportunities, YouTube has some good videos to help decipher the trails and terrain (Wengen side and Murren side]. Axel described the 2 sides as east and west ledges, much like the 2 overhead storage areas for your bags on the bus, left and right sides. Then, Lauterbrinnen valley is the floor that runs front to back. Great analogy for people new to the terrain. Most of us one side one day, and the other side the next day. And the waterfalls after Murren.

This may be WAY too much information, but it was simply that much fun! Excited for you :)

Barbara -
a quick mention about food tours. Maybe in Salzburg there may have been a tour, or maybe just trying their specialty pastries or pretzels, beer, etc.? I saw an apple streudel class. These towns didn’t scream “food tour” in my opinion. But as a vegan maybe I wasn’t paying attn to the traditional foods. For this vegan, I ate a wide variety of ethnic food in Salzburg, Dolomites I ate at hotel Villa Kastelruth, Füssen hotel altered a traditional dish for me, Switzerland was a very expensive Thai curry and a $5 (Swiss franc) pitcher of tap water (!) one night but fresh produce, bread and jar pesto for dinner and lunch the other 2 nites, Chamonix was vegan tapas, chocolate, and a gazpacho lunch I could eat by the gallon (Le Manchu- a fondue place!). The antique restaurant by the Glacé du Mer was very good, range of food and a neat setting by the cogwheel train. Lots of gelato and excellent coffee opportunities. FYI Most of Salzburg dining wanted cash- not Apple Pay or cards.

Chamonix had a great outdoor market. I didn’t seek out the one in Salzburg. So maybe that’s a great day to sample some local typical foods? The COOP in Wengen had very good prices on tomatoes avocados carrots, etc. and lots of chocolate. It gets busy and closes EARLIER than you think.

Bon appetite!

PS: someone asked about Annecy. It was an easy bus ride from Chamonix, then I stayed at the inexpensive and very convenient Hotel des Alpes for 2 nights before heading to Paris.
Not fancy but comfortable to me, a/c worked well, and quiet overlooking courtyard. Very friendly staff.
E-bikes around the lake was a nice way to rest the legs after all the hiking!
