We are thinking of booking this tour for 2024 and would like to tie in Oktoberfest in Munich. This would have to be at the end of the trip as it doesn’t start until 9/21/24. With the trip ending in Chamonix, what would be the easiest way to get back to Munich? How is transport handled at trip end for group?
After the tour is over it is up to you to get to your next destination. This is one of the problems with some of the RS tours, you are sometimes left in out of the way places without real close transport.
Your best bet is to train to Geneva from Chamonix and fly from Geneva to Munich the following day. Keep in mind this will be a very busy time so reservations for everything is a must and expect higher than normal costs.
The bus from Chamonix to Geneva is much faster than the train. There is bus service to the airport as well as to the train station area.
We did a round trip to Munich -- train to Salzburg to start the tour. From Chamonix we took a shuttle to Geneva where we took the train to Innsbruck for a couple days before taking the train back to Munich.
You could also think about going by train. It is an 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hour journey with a few train changes. Flying will save about 2 1/2 hours when all is said and done.
Train would actually be my choice. I would break up the journey with an overnight along the route, maybe Basel. Or Colmar.
You could go by train via Switzerland, starting with the train to Martigny. That is actually quite a nice scenic route.
This is going to eat up a day no matter how. The route via Martigny is good value. Book Martigny - Munich on www.bahn.de. If you book this early enough this will cost you 39,90 pp.
Chamonix - Martigny you buy locally in Chamonix, and is just a fixed price (around 30,-).
However summer 2024 is still a long time away. By that time it may be possible to book this ticket al the way through on Bahn.
