I’m thinking about going on the My Way Alpine tour by myself. I’ve never been on a My Way tour, do the tour members do things together? I’d like to be able to be as active or non-active as I please. When I chose to be active, how open are people to having a solo traveler tag along? I’m not crazy about hiking the Swiss mountains by myself, but I also don’t want to be a nuisance.
I've only done the regular tours, usually as a single. On either type, I think it's going to be hit or miss as to whether you find people to do things with. My experience has varied.
I am doing the regular, Switzerland tour in June and adding solo days after. I don't like hiking alone, but I expect the trails I am interested in will be well traveled and fine.
Hi. I did this tour solo. I was able to engage with others or not, as I wished. I am not a hiker per se. I walk and meander and typically come on a tour with a to-do list. I found our group to be tremendously cordial. I really enjoyed the people I met, couples, solos, small groups. I could always find someone to walk with or eat with - often small groups would head out and then find other groups of tour members having the same idea - if that makes sense? And it was not as if we formed cliques - not that I could tell. We engaged in spontaneous things together, for instance, a wine party on the tiny hotel lawn in Chamonix where we could watch rafters float down the river next to us. Or a fantastic Greek restaurant in Fuessen. Or a walk from Muerren to Gimmelwald followed by wonderful time contemplating the alpine view from the local hostelry's patio - with sandwiches and refreshment.
My take-aways on this trip: I was quite content to ditch my to-do list and actually take a vacation; I got over my fear of cable cars; Swiss grandmothers walk faster than I do - I believe Rick has referred to the times posted on signposts as being arrived at based on the walking speed of Swiss grandmothers.
I will do this tour again. And, I do have a to-do for next time - actually more than one. I want to walk the Lauterbrunnen Valley and imagine Middle Earth. The best YouTube video I found over covid lock-down was on walking through this valley - snowy at the time. I was entranced. I rate this tour top of my list.
If you sign up, I hope you enjoy this trip.
I think you will find that most of the tour members will be open to having you join them. While I have always taken the tours with my husband, we always welcomed the single members to join us. Rick seems to attract kind generous people to his tours.
We've never done a My Way tour, only RS guided tours. I assumed the whole point of My Way is to be as active or non-active as you please. I'd go with the expectation that you are solo, but be pleasantly surprised when you find others who are welcoming. I also think the best way is to just say it, maybe while you're all working out your days events or in a chat with the tour guide. "I'm hiking tomorrow, and if anyone cares to join me, I'd love the company. It doesn't put anyone on the immediate spot and also reminds people that you might be solo, but appreciate travel companions at certain times. That kind of statement gets the conversations going.
On the guided RS tours, we've found that frequently people group up for an activity or dinner in their free time. And the solo travelers always seem to part of those groups. We tend to do our free evenings on our own, since we do so many group dinners together. We're not unsociable but really enjoy some downtime as well. I think everyone looks for balance.
I think the tour you have chosen looks amazing!
I did My Way France solo. I think you will find your fellow tour members to be welcoming.
But I also went to Switzerland on my own the previous year and did quite a bit of hiking. As I had anticipated, there were plenty of people on the trails, which made me feel completely comfortable hiking by myself.
You’ll LOVE this tour. I did it as a solo traveler this past summer. Another lady was also solo and we stayed in touch. Sometimes travel mates would sit together for breakfast, chat, then say hi out on the trails maybe have a coffee, then continue on our way. Other couples/friends would extend an invite, and I would accept or decline, but either way, everyone is typically very friendly and open. But understanding if you want your personal space. Some of the couples split off bc one is more active than the other so there were options. One wife and I rode bikes out to the LUGE in Füssen. I later ran into others at the BATHS (pools and saline pools) there in Füssen.
At one point i was alone on part of the trail Romantica trail near Mannlichen. I only saw cows and mountains, and i felt very small in the grand world. Can be quite contemplative away from the main sites :)
Enjoy!
I have been on two My Way tours along with 10 regular RS tours as a single……you will gravitate towards “your People” so to speak and find as much or as little company as you like….There was several singles on last year’s Alpine trip and offers for doing hikes together were abundant. You’ll have time on the bus to get to know people and singles/couples who want to do things a little separate stay out of the mix on the bus……or so it seems. Anyhow, I would go in with my own plan for the day, listen to suggestions by the tour guide, and listen to bus chatter to see if someone is doing what you are and just ask if they mind if you tag along……. On both the My Way tours the guides have been extremely valuable about advising and aiding in day plans……
I'm going on the Alpine tour in May and though I'm traveling with my husband, would love to connect with a solo, as would my husband. Wish we would meet you along the way.
I did this tour in 2022 and was a solo traveler. I had the BEST time! Everyone was very welcoming for me to join them and I've kept in touch with several members of the tour group. Some days I got up and out early on my own, but it was nice to also hike with new friends and take in the beautiful hikes together. I've thought about doing this tour again, that's how much I enjoyed it.
Virginia I am wondering if you have ever taken a regular "fully loaded" RS tour? or only My Way Tours? My husband and I have taken several RS tours but never a My Way. We were really considering the My Way Alpine tour as it touches on several spots I wanted to see or return to. Just wondering from someone who has experienced both how the My Way compares to a "full loaded" RS tour. Thank you !!
Thank you to everyone who chimed in. I signed up! You wonderful people gave me the courage!
Have a wonderful trip Annie! As a solo traveler I've been seriously considering a "My Way" tour and the replies to your post have been very helpful in making my decision to book the 12 day My Way Alpine for June 2025. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 other RS tours Greece, Ireland and this June Scandinavia but will be fun to experience this other style of travel for comparison if nothing else.
I did this tour solo in 2019, overall a great trip. I had my own schedule and did most things by myself but I was asked to join along and most everyone was inviting and welcomed me. Enjoy!
