My Way Alpine June 4 2025

Hello fellow travelers :)

Who will be going during these dates (4 June - 15 June, 2025) with the Rick Steves Alps My Way Tour ?

I thought we could chat a bit ... get to know one another... ask specific questions related to our dates, etc.

Our family of 5 adults (myself, my husband and our 24- year- old triplets) are looking forward to our 2nd Alpine My Way trip with RS Tours! We had the MOST incredible time last summer (2024) as we visited Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and France. Worth every penny. Clearly, we loved this experience so much that we signed up for a second time!

Prost !

Hi Mitzi,
I am not going on this trip but I wish I was!!! Went last year in September and it was fabulous. I would do it every year if I could. Enjoy and I sure will look forward to your post trip report. Regina

Wow! Same tour two years in a row. Please come back after your tour and tell us about that experience from one year to the next. Those are great locations.

Hi Mitzi!

I have found your posts so helpful—thank you!

We are going the week before you on this trip. I wondered what you are doing differently this trip versus last year’s trip. Activities? Packing? Pre and post trip plans?

Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

Wanderlust,
I'm so glad that you've found my posts to be helpful. :) It's great fun chatting about our European Alps vacation!

What we're doing differently this trip vs. last summer on our RS Alps My Way adventure?
Wow.... where do I begin ??
Planning some. Not a huge amount but more than last time. We were all working full-time or in college last year and had never taken a tour with any group. Honestly, it was absolutely fabulous that we had nothing to worry about and were at peace knowing the accommodations, breakfasts and transportation was all provided for us. Aside from getting airfare, and making a reservation for the castle and a few extra nights at our beginning and ending hotels, we completely just went with the flow. Paid close attention to what tidbits our guide would talk about on the bus and read up on the next city as we enjoyed the bus rides. It was incredibly relaxing and we had the time of our lives. The most stressful part of our adventure in the summer of 2024 was finding adequate care for our pets at home. Eventually, we hired a lovely and competent caregiver for our elderly pets but it was the first time we'd left them and finding just the right person took a lot of effort. So, enough of that rabbit trail (haha!) - my work situation this year went from full time to part time and 2 of my triplets are no longer full-time students. More free time has given me the luxury of reading more about places we'll see. From what I've read and from what travelers on our '24 tour told us, no 2 trips will be the same. Already, we have different hotels at the beginning and end. We'll be flying into a different city and taking a train into Salzburg. We know that it really is important not to have your carry-on bags be too cumbersome. I actually tripped on the stairs as I exited the plane when we landed in Salzburg. It's really a miracle I didn't tumble all the way to the tarmac. All because my backpack was just way too heavy for me to be sure-footed. Thankfully, I landed smack on the stair, right onto my bottom and only my little bag went to the ground. Lesson learned.
I am not bringing sandals. Cobblestones are everywhere and cute footwear is absolutely not as important as lace-up strength for my ankles. We're learning more about Mozart before traveling to the city of his birth, along with more about King Ludwig whose castle we visited. Also, watched the Sound of Music recently and will take a SoM tour this time. Didn't do that last time. We will have a list of 4 or more excellently-rated restaurants that we've researched, within our price range, on hand for each city. Last year we wasted time looking up google reviews instead of just going to eat. Also, making sure we have a plan for Switzerland. That is the country that, although we loved every moment, we didn't take advantage (as we should have) of the mountain destinations. More research and a loosely-held, flexible plan will be on the ready. We're staying more than 1 extra night in Chamonix. The flight to get overseas is the most costly of any portion of this journey so staying longer only makes sense. Our children could likely be departing to the four corners of the earth once we return to the real world after this Alps trip. We're spending the money now and have no regrets doing so.
We'll most-likely have a different RS guide, a different bus driver and definitely a different group of fellow travelers. I'm hopeful we'll love all the new peeps as much as we did our group in '24.
I hope these thoughts help :)
I'm happy to answer any questions. I'm confident you'll have a life-changing, FABULOUS Rick Steves Alps adventure! Be thinking of a song you'd like to contribute to a playlist that the guide might compile for the bus trip(s). I loved that part! I listen to ours all the time. Such an eclectic mash of music :)

Hi Mitzi - Loved reading about your plans for your tour. We are doing the same trip but later in the summer. With our three kids too - but they are younger! Great ideas about researching restaurants ahead of time. We did the RS family Europe tour in 2023 and had an absolute blast. But everything was planned for you for the most part. I’m excited to have the freedom of this trip but also know I need to do a little more planning! Do you know anything about which castle is most worth visiting? Trying to decide which one is best.

All the best!

Hi Jennie,
If you read some of my posts, I'm quite chatty about our 2024 alps adventure (hehehe).

To answer your castle question, we loved our guided tour of Neuschwanstein and, of course, Mary's Bridge has an amazing view. Because we have already seen N, we opted to tour Hohenshwangau this coming June. We also did some reading and plan on looking for the memorial at the lake where King Ludwig died so long ago.
We're making our decision about the Bavarian King museum once we're there as it is self-guided and won't need an appointment.
Be absolutely certain to be on time for your guided tour. Fellow travelers missed their window by only a few minutes and were not permitted entry. I've read such reports over and over again. We were early and very alert. When they call your time, be near the rope and don't delay :)

I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have :)

Thanks Mitzi for taking the time to share your additional thoughts! Once again, I found your tips so helpful.

Out of all the “stops” on this tour, I’m most overwhelmed with the time spent in Wengen. We are staying at The Hotel Regina. Would you mind sharing what you will be focusing on in Switzerland?

I am so thankful that you did not get injured when you tripped! How frightening to think of what could have been.

I appreciate the reminder to pack light. This will be our second RS tour. We have experienced those cobblestones, walking a few blocks to the hotel with our luggage and staying at properties without elevators. We packed light on our first tour but plan on “lightening” our load even further this time!

Wanderlust and Mitzi, I hope you report back after your tour. I plan to take this tour next year. Looking at tour dates now.

Mitzi, I will be taking this tour but later in July. I took one of these tours way back in 2001 when it was called “ Bed, Bus And Breakfast” to Spain and Portugal. I’m so glad to be taking another of this kind as I love getting to plan my itinerary. Thanks for your comments and I will eagerly be keeping up with this post as well as reading your trip report as insider insights are so helpful in planning. Hope you will also report on this trip as you will be back more than a month before I take off and put my plan into action. Not sure yet where we will be staying except first and last so researching Salzburg and Munich ( where we will go before joining tour group). I’ ve been to Fussen before to both castles but my travel partner hasn’t so we will probably do those again. I loved Fussen and have no problem returning. S. Tirol, Lauterbrunnen Valley and Chamonix are my new places. Keep those posts with tips, yays, and nays coming as you can. I appreciate all ideas.

gaby,
Just a quick note while I have a chance to be online: Chamonix, we enjoyed this restaurant that was recommended by our tour guide, Laurel, and is also in the RS book:
https://lemonchu-chamonix.fr/en/
Delicious food, friendly staff, not overly pricey (not cheap, though) and easy to find. And, of course, there are many, many bakeries and pastry shops that look amazing. We found that a lot of stores are closed on Sunday. It used to be that way in the USA when I was a child.

More later :)

Hi Mitzi-
I love your posts! So many great details! We’ll be on the Alpine Tour beginning July 26, 2025. I appreciated your comment about sandals- I will definitely rethink that! I’ve just started thinking about packing for all the various weather! Any tips would be helpful!

lahmusic,
As always, it makes me smile to know that my ramblings about the greatest moments we've spent in Europe are sometimes helpful to other travelers :)
What to wear ? I believe July is a great time (as was June) for layers. But, probably even less need the hotter it gets. I packed several (3) sleeveless tops (and 2 tshirts) and a neutral off-white, light-weight long sweater. It was nice to have it for the cooler winds that sometimes met us in early June along with the indoor climates that can be chilly. 2 pairs long shorts, 1 pair capris and 1 pair of jeans. Probably too many clothes but mix and match worked well. I will cut down to less for our next trip. I will only take 1 pair of shoes instead of 3 like in 2024.

I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have :)

alousierra,
You're going to love every minute of your Alpine adventure with RS tours! I can see myself going on some sort of RS tour every year, for as long as I'm able. Living life, every day to its fullest! :)

ENJOY!

My wife and took the Alpine My Way Tour several years back and completely loved it! There was so much we wanted to do on our own. Hiking in Alpe di Siusi. Skipping the Neuschwannstein tour (which we had done previously) and walking around Alp See. Makiing chocolate in Interlaken. Touring the open air museum outside of Interlaken. You'll have a great time!

The only disappointment, which was out of anyone's control, was that the Zugspitze was covered in clouds, as well as Mont Blanc. No point in taking the cable car to the top when you'll just get to see clouds.

Mitzi--I keep thinking we're going on your tour since we're flying to Europe on June 4, so the date catches my eye. But we're visiting Bruges and Paris first and won't be getting to Salzburg until mid-June. Have a great time!

Friends,
I may have mentioned it in my many posts but several of you have asked me to share any tip I can think of for the Alpine adventure. One can save a little bit of money by taking a lightweight, foldable, reusable bag with you for shopping. Most every store (at least every grocery store or pharmacy-type business) charges for a bag for you to carry your purchases. It's not many € at all and, in some cases, I was glad I got a very inexpensive souvenir out of it. However, for convenience and to feel more like a local, take a bag with you when shopping.

Hi tripletblessings, Mitzi, I'm afraid that your thread sort of proves what we often say here - that very few people going on tours, both traditional and My Way, read and follow the Rick Steves Forums.

That's their loss of course, and you have gained so much from joining us, and we have reading your excellent posts.

So sorry the response was not what was hoped for ...

My wife and I are going on this trip Aug 10. I am trying to do some pre-planning and can't tell from the Itinerary which city we stay in in South Tyrol region (Bolzano? or another?). Anyone have a feel for that?

Thanks for any info...

Steve--It's the luck of the draw as to whether you stay in Bolzano or Castelrotto. I've seen people saying they were staying in the latter this summer, and we are staying in the former. We're a little disappointed since we loved our previous stay in Castelrotto, but either way we get to hike in the Dolomites again, so we're not too disappointed.

We are on our way in a week, tour beginning June 9th - can't wait! We have be given a hotel in Castelrotto and it does look wonderful!
Having said this, we are so saddened by the glacier that has devastated the small Alpine village of Blatten. I believe this is about 21 km from Lauterbrunnen. Hoping there will be a way to contribute to a fund for the villagers. You may have seen some of the videos as they evacuated the residents and the cows. So good that they did.
Enjoy everyone and safe travels!

When people say they're packing rain gear what are they referring to? I have a water repellant jacket I was thinking to bring but this one doesn't have a hood. I also have a couple of those cheap plastic rain covers you can fold and keep in your pocket just in case.

I'm looking at temperatures for Vienna, Salzburg, Chamonix, Montreaux, Lauterbrunnen, Zermatt. Zermatt is the coolest with mid-40's on some days with rain/snow. Gotta throw in a stocking cap and gloves. Then the other extreme is that I'm seeing the occasional 80.

I generally run cold. What temps are on the bus?

I mentioned in my previous post that we're going on the June 16 MWA tour. We've also made arrangements for 5 days in Vienna before the tour. After we'll go to Montreaux, Zermatt, and Lucerne, flying out of Zurich.

Dempsyf - sounds like a great trip!
I am bringing a VERY light rain jacket (think shell really) with hood (hat so hood doesn't fall over my eyes, which it always does!). I can keep this with me easily in my Rick Steves daybag.....AND my puffer jacket as well (where I have gloves). I will have layers on. My husband will do the same. Marna

marnamc2 Thank you for your reply. A puffer jacket? Oh I didn't know it could be that cold. What locations do you think you'll use it?

On MWA in mid-June 2023, we had hot days (upper 80’s) in Salzburg. Warm weather everywhere else xc top of the Chamonix mountains, one day in Wengen and the top of the Zugspitze (an hour or so stop en route to destination). Even at Mont Blanc, I only used a lightweight hoodie and a light rain jacket/shell with hood. I didn’t hike there, just spent time at the top on the different levels for photos etc. I don’t live in a cold climate//not used to cold weather, but I didn’t need anything heavier than my hoodie. Some folks wore the light nano puff waterproof jackets or vests. We also wore shorts!

DO take rain gear at all times.

Enjoy!

Depsyf - in looking at Shawn's reply, we could be wrong in our strategy. puffer jackets - extremely lightweight, so can be stuffed into RS Daybag....BUT I worried about gondola rides and being up at the top and lookouts. I hate being cold especially if windy - my husband is even worse. SO probably too much of a precaution. BUT they are packed!
