My Way Alpine

Hi RS travelers,
I am heading out this July on the Alpine tour with family.
Two questions,
1 How early do travel days start? I have done many group tours and know it can be a surprise to some "on vacation".
2 I am traveling with young teen granddaughter, any thoughts on proper attire? I suspect shorts and leggings ( her normal look) will be ok in the mountains but not sure about the more urban stops or dining out.
Thanks

I can’t speak to the timing issue, but I suggest you focus on the temperature one. European Julys are hotter recently even in the Alps. I am in the Dolomites now and it has been averaging 10 C above normal. You should discuss with her what hot weather clothes look like to her. A sweatshirt/sweater to supplement. Europe also seems much more casual than I remember from four years ago. Just have fun.

How fun! I went this past June and had a great time. Most mornings we left around 8:30/8:45. One morning we had a longer drive so we left by 8, if i remember correctly. The hotels all had pretty good breakfasts, so be sure to get there early enough to fuel up. You’ll have rest stops for lunch. Sometimes i just took a picnic from groceries/snacks, fruit, etc. But some places had fun vegan options, Like the NordSee tofu-fish sandwich.

I saw plenty of leggings and shorts. You’ll both want a rain jacket with a hood and perhaps a cap. I took a ball cap and a straw hat. We had drizzle in Salzburg and full on rain in Switzerland. Drizzle in Chamonix. Also, yes, shorts but with sunscreen on legs. I got sunburned on my knees in alpi di suisi. I wore my long sleeved sun shirt as a layer on hiking days, sometimes only wearing the lightweight sunshirt with shorts. You’ll want the layers for Chamonix if you head up Mont Blanc lift. You’ll see snow.

Overall, it was all casual for us. Most people wore their day clothes to dinner. Some days I threw on a t-shirt dress or my skirt with sandals bc it was comfy, and gave my day clothes time to dry out ;)

Yes, it was HOT hiking around Salzburg (i took the bus out to Konigsee - electric boats across lake, hike to waterfalls). Maybe you’d both enjoy the bike tour with Fraulein Maria. It wasn’t very strenuous but you see a lot of Salzburg, including some wide open areas near their home on the movie. The hotel a/c worked very well, and had great big windows to watch the storm clouds roll in that night.

So, pack for snow and heat, LOL, really just a few sets of layers. I didn’t take a fleece but had a long sleeve base layer I wore up to Mont Blanc and then one other day in Switzerland. I had a lightweight knit hoodie plus a simple Columbia rain jacket. Hiking shorts & pants and twill shorts, a denim skirt, a t-shirt dress and about 5 tops. And a BATHING SUIT if you take the bike ride or bus out to the saline baths in Füssen. You truly float in the meadow with the castles in the distance. And of course, the LUGE in Füssen. :)

Great packing suggestions! I understand June is the rainiest month so packing for hot and cold makes total sense. Thanks.
