Munich,Saltzburg and Vienna tour during Snowstorm

This trip was magical...after we pretended we were on the Great Race! About an hour before we were to land in Munich the pilot announced we would be landing in Frankfort due to snow. He said we would get further instructions but we didn't. After landing several "official" cars arrived at the stranded jet parking lot. We were told many flights had to cancel ,ours being one . And that was it. A woman I assume from United was at the top of the stairs. I asked how far Frankfort was from Munich. She didn't know🫣 Long storyshort, found a train to Nuremberg, luckily found a room and waited to try and get to Munich the next day,the start of the tour. The next day still no trains, one seat on an afternoon bus so we taxied to Munich,an hour and a half away. I won't think about the cost because the tour was great. Our great tour guide Barbara was able to stay flexible and we only had a few changes.Christmas markets with snow on the pines was beyond believe. I think it was like labor. After the terrible trip in,the beauty of Munich and Saltzburg and the mountains covered with snow in Halstatt were just beyond description. We even made our way to the salt mine in Halstatt and went down 2 wooden slides! Our tour ended in Vienna (where it snowed lighty again) at the beautiful Kaiserhof Hotel. Mr. Steves really up his game with this place!!
All in all a most memorable trip! Thank you Barbara S. for taking us to Artetten Castle where Franz Ferdinand and his wife are buried. Hearing the history of the start of WW1 and seeing how our history is repeating its self now was quite an eye opener!

Sounds magical! And when will you get to taxi from Nuremberg to Munich again?

This is one of my favorite tours. Glad you had a good time.

An amazing story! I was on the 7 Days Best of Paris tour, Dec 3-9, and one of our tourmates was stuck in Munich because of the snowstorm and missed the first 2 days of our magical tour! What a coincidence.
I was on the Munich Salzberg Vienna tour in December 2019 and absolutely loved it! Rick’s guides are the best.

Wow! Great that you were able to find a workaround albeit costly. It must have been beautiful. We were hoping for snow when we were at the Christmas markets years ago but it was more like spring. The pansies were still in bloom at the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg.

Oh, my!
I did that tour at the beginning of Dec. 2017, and we did have some snow on the day we traveled to Hallstatt, and had a boat ride on the lake while snow was falling. Gorgeous! The next morning we woke up to a blue sky sunny day.

I'm glad you enjoyed your tour. I just returned today from what was supposed to be a Munich-Salzburg-Vienna trip, but Munich got cut due to Lufthansa cancelling my Dec 5 flight into Munich -- ended up arriving the follow day via a re-scheduled flight on Air Canada. Got to do Christmas markets with snow! It was great fun!.
