Mary's Post with email from Rick Steves Tours (See also post from RS tours at the end)

Mary recently shared her experience with a different tour company on another thread. At the end of the thread she shared this email she had received from Rick Steves Tours in response to one she had sent the company. It has such good information in it and I was concerned many who would be interested in this information wouldn't read all the way to the end of the older thread, I have pasted it here.

"I emailed RS Tours to let them know of our recent experience in Costa Rica so that we could all learn from it and this is their reply. I don’t think they will mind me sharing this info -

Thanks very much for your email and invaluable feedback Mary. We are very excited to start running our first tours since the start of the pandemic, and also anxious to avoid missteps. I know they’re inevitable, but the more we can learn from others’ experiences the better prepared we can be.

We do know that medical grade N95 or KN95 masks are often required at sights and venues, so that’s what we’ve instructing our participants to use on our tours—this information goes out to all of our tour members in the form of COVID updates and packing reminder emails.

We know that COVID protocols and regulations need to be taken seriously and that starts with the leadership of our tour teams of guides and drivers. Until local guidelines change, masks need to be worn properly and at all times when we aren’t in the privacy of our rooms or dining.

We are requiring our Feb-Apr departures to provide negative COVID tests at the beginning of the tour, and anyone experiencing COVID symptoms during the tour would need to test to continue the tour. We plan to have self tests available to administer (proctored by a guide) in situations where we are in remote areas or pharmacies are closed, but in those cases we’re requiring a second test to be taken once we get to a place where an official test can be administered by health care officials. Even in cases of double negative results, if a participant still has symptoms we’d want them to be seen by a physician to make sure they’re not contagious before returning to the group so we could be assured that the risk of others getting sick is minimal.

To incentivize participants to safeguard their health as well as the group’s, Rick has developed a new COVID Wellness Refund policy:

If a Tour Member tests positive for COVID within 48 hours of the start of a tour or during tour, we will refund tour payments in full or pro-rata respectively. If a Tour Member tests for COVID (takes a day off from tour activities because they’re feeling crummy and tests for COVID) and it’s negative we will refund that day.

We know that our reputation and people’s confidence in Rick Steves’ Tours is on the line, and we all want to do our best to keep everyone as healthy as possible on our tours.

This is very reassuring to say the least. And hubby is feeling much better."

Kudos all around, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing.

I think it's incredibly tempting right now for everyone (myself included) to let down our guard a bit, given a lot of what we are seeing/hearing/reading in the news, but it's still important for us all to remain careful and observant for a while....although there are lots of positive signs (and I'm personally feeling hopeful and encouraged), the "recovery" we are all hoping for is inconsistent and will continue to move forward at different speeds in different places. It behooves us all to continue being smart and observant of protocols going forward until we get some kind of an all-clear. It's good to see that RSE will be doing exactly that, continuing with their "do the right thing" approach as we all watch that light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel get closer.

Thanks for re-posting. That sounds like a very well thought-out and reasoned policy. Glad to see that they are continuing to take safety seriously. Things like this make me glad that we picked RS for our first organized tour. Will be eagerly waiting for the 2023 tours to get announced!

Carol, that is a wonderful policy, and is certainly in keeping with Rick Steve’s’ good reputation.

Could you tell me exactly where that “new COVID Wellness Refund policy” is found on Rick Steve’s’ site or any of our tour documents?

Thanks much.

Just when I think their policies can't be any more generous and sensible, they figure out how to further incent aligned interests.

Imagine what a group meeting at Rick Steves Europe must be like....

Carol, sincere thanks for sharing. I was unaware of this policy. I’m curious (as we are scheduled for a RS tour to Italy in the fall) as to why we did not know about this wonderful Covid refund. It is as others have said a very reassuring and fair policy. We have been so impressed with everyone associated with Rick Steve’s Tours, they have always been very polite and helpful.

This is certainly good news, and really what I have come to expect from RS.

I'm sure things will evolve all year, and I can understand why only people on the early tours would have been notified of the current policy. I am sure people will get the newest version of the policy before their final tour costs are due.

I'm signed up for an April tour. Just a suggestion here. I recently attended a national convention and we were allowed to do a home covid test within 48 hours of the conference and send a dated photo of the negative test and a copy of our vaccinecard. This was verified by a company called " crowd pass" and we were given QR codes to enter the conference. It made it easier to get the test and was cost effective as I'm not sure getting verified tests without an exposure or symptoms can be done without significant out of pocket cost. It may differ with insurance carriers if they cover testing costs for travel only purposes.

I am on an early April tour - no official notification of this "COVID Wellness Refund" policy sent to me. I reviewed tour documents and could not find any reference to this. They did defer our final payment to 30 days prior to tour - so perhaps they will notify prior to that.

I don't know the answer to that question. I would call RS office to confirm the correct answer. My instinct is that, yes, it has to be an official test vs. home test with no proctor. However, only RS can tell you for sure what their policy is.

Hello,
This is Heidi from the Tour Sales & Service department at Rick Steves' Europe.
For our pre-tour testing requirement (currently only applies to Feb-Apr departures), home tests with telehealth services are acceptable.
We will be adding the Covid Wellness Refund policy to our Tour FAQ and to all tour members' online tour accounts very shortly. We are excited to offer this extra reassurance to our tour members so they can enjoy greater security on their travels.
