At the end of our RS Best of Tuscany tour in September, we want to make our way up to DeSenzano Del Garda via train from Lucca (and from there we will go to Lake Como). We would like to break up the long train journey from Lucca to Lake Garda by stopping somewhere in-between for a night or two. Looks like Rome2Rio says the quickest/best route via train is Lucca-Florence-DeSenzano. However, we will spend a couple of days in Florence at the beginning of our tour (and have been to Florence before in the past), so would like to have another option for a couple of nights on the route. I should mention that we are both in our 70’s, have traveled via train in that area of Europe quite a few times before, and love just wandering around quaint and scenic villages, stopping in cafes and shops, enjoying the architecture, etc., no hiking or difficult terrain (cobblestones OK). Any other recommended places to see on the way with convenience to trains? Any recommended hotels not too far from the train (prefer smaller “Rick-style” places)? Thanks for your guidance!
