Last minute packing panic, and it's gonna be HOT

Hi there!
I'm leaving for Greece TOMORROW. It's a Rick Steves tour - I love them so much, it's my third, and this one is so important to me because I'm taking my teen son, and I want him to love it too (I think he will).

It's going to be hot... low to mid 90s, hotter on the marbles of the Parthenon. That's when kids' summer breaks are, unfortunately. I've spent time looking at Rick Steves Greece tour scrapbooks in June - but I wonder if it's easier just to ask. When you were there in the first 2-3 weeks of June, what did you and others wear, what did you pack, what did you wish you had packed instead of other foolish things you packed. And what are RS tours to Greece like in June when it's super hot?

Thank you. We're very excited and second guessing everything in the suitcase pile.

I’ve been in Europe for about a month each of the last three summers and the most important things I brought along were a hat and individual packages of Liquid IV to keep my electrolytes in balance.

We did this tour the first two weeks of April, and while we had some cool mornings and evenings, the days were pleasant. Only one day of rain. Our guide, Ioanna, was excellent, so if she's your guide she will make the best of whatever the weather is. I do remember we toured the Parthenon early in the morning. It will probably be too hot to do some of the hiking we did on our free time, but there's other things you can do to stay out of the heat. Hopefully the evenings will be pleasant for walking around outside, I hope Ioanna is your guide, she is lovely.

I was there in June and wore a lot of tank tops, shorts and sun dresses. Do not forget a hat! Remember this isn’t a fashion show, it’s about the experiences. So wear what makes you comfortable and cool!

A hat for the sun, for sure. Loose-fitting, lightweight clothes.

If you pack sleeveless tops, also pack a lightweight shawl or shirt that you can slip on before you go into the churches, to cover your shoulders.

Much of the tour is in coastal areas, which will help moderate the temps. Once you leave Athens, you’ll feel cooler!

Drink lots of water. Our tour was 12 years ago (!), but at that time, the price of a bottle of water was capped at 50 cents, no matter where you bought it. So we never had to hunt for someplace to buy water.

It’s a wonderful tour. Enjoy!!

Pack the fabrics that make you feel the coolest. Some of the synthetic fabrics make me feel clammy, plus they hold a sweat scent. I prefer a lightweight cotton for those hottest days.

It’s too late for OP to go shopping. But for others: after years of caring for my horses, riding and living in the heat, I recommend Kerrits Ice Fil riding shirts.
The fabric has tiny perforations for airflow and cooling. Counter intuitive, long sleeve is actually cooler that short sleeve or sleeveless because it keeps the sun off your skin.

We did this tour last year, mid-May into June, and there were some short heat waves. The low humidity definitely made shade actually feel cooler. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Water is very cheap there and supposed to be price-capped. If someone's trying to sell it to you for more than a euro, go somewhere else.

Hats and sunscreen are essential. We just bought the sunscreen from a pharmacy in Athens. If you don't already have a good sunhat, they are plentiful over there. I'd avoid wearing jeans, if possible. Bring breathable fabrics. Most of my shirts were cotton, linen, or merino wool, and I never felt stuffy.

Wonderful tips, thank you! I swapped out a couple of things to add more shorts/sundresses. I'd been leaning more towards pants for all the walks through terrain/ruins, but if you say shorts/dresses are suitable, I'll be much cooler in that.

I haven't been on this tour but have been to Greece twice when had temperatures in high 90s.

What I have taken is lightweight cotton ankle pants that were long enough for plane ride, 2 pairs capris (I don't wear shorts touring any more), a light weight skirt, and a sleeveless dress. I have brought two tank tops and rest short sleeved tops.

I would bring one light weight sweater or very light weight jacket for the plane and for evenings if it is unexpectedly cool. I didn't the first time and regretted it.

I did not bring my trusty rain coat and was fine without it.

We did a Greece tour in July many years ago. Cotton skirts or dresses were what I found most comfortable in the heat. And hats just make me hotter by trapping heat. I took a small umbrella with a reflective layer. It really helped.
