I am unsure about your question. Are you asking if anyone has traveled a route similar to that taken by the Rick Steves Tours, but traveled by themselves? The answer is going to be a resounding "yes." Many people will look at guide books and possible stops and then tweak them to fit their own needs.

What is behind your question? Are you wondering if this is something that you could just do on your own? Probably... Do keep in mind that one (of many) positive features of the Rick Steves Tours is the provided transportation. Ireland doesn't have the same ease of public transport that many other European countries do. If you are comfortable driving in Ireland, you shouldn't have an issue.

I will point out that on the trip advisor Ireland forum, there is much discussion that Rick's suggestion for the Ring of Kerry is dangerous and some feel illegal. If you are driving, investigate this carefully.
