Hiking Shoes

I will be going on the GAS tour this summer. I was wondering if waterproof hiking shoes such as those made by Keen are necessary. Would sturdy sneakers be sufficient for the walks in Switzerland? Thanks!

Sneakers will be fine. You’ll be hiking on defined paths, not mountain climbing.

Yes, I agree with Patricia. UNLESS you plan to do some steep mountain hikes like walking down from the Schilthorn you'll be OK with regular athletic shoes. I'd want to make sure they are new enough that you still have some tread on the soles, though.

I've done Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg twice on RS tours and on the GAS tour also did the Mountain View hike from the top of the Almendhubel funicular. It's the easier of the hikes and altho it started on a trail, it eventually ended up being on a wide paved track. We did divert down a side trail to Mürren which was back to a small dirt trail but still easily done in athletic shoes. Others in our group did the North Face hike from Almendhubel which was more strenuous but still manageable in athletic shoes.

Do have a waterproof rain jacket for this tour!

The tread is what is important. Some athletic shoes have a good tread, others not so much.
Something with a bit of a lug sole would be best.
There are multiple trails available. I preferred some of the longer (and rockier) ones. I was glad to have shoes with a good sole.

I wear Ahnu waterproof hiking shoes when traveling. I also wear them frequently at home. They provide a great deal of support and the waterproof is just an added benefit that is sometimes used. I find them as helpful on cobblestone streets as mountain paths.

I didn't go on the GAS tour so it may well be that your time in Murren and surroundings will be so limited that you won't get off a paved path. What a shame! Most people will hike on trails. I took the furnicular up and hiked from there to the train station at the top of the Gondola from Lauterbrunnen. I needed good hiking shoes for this trail.
