I really hate the smell and notice it even after a room has been well aired out. I don't remember any problems on the tour 5 years ago (which was really good). I was back in Athens (and some islands) a couple years later and don't remember anyone smoking anywhere indoors. Most (all?) of the people on my tour didn't smoke and the only issue that came up in conversation was about the toilet paper.

When you get the list of hotels for the tour, you can check their websites for their policies. If any allow smoking, ask your guide at the start of the tour if s/he can request NS rooms for you at those hotels.

We were just on the Greece tour in May and had no problem with our rooms. All were non-smoking and none had any hint of smoke smell.
This is a wonderful tour, enjoy!
