GAS - Munich Walking Tour

Hello GAS Alumni,

I am going on the GAS tour at the end of August. I am a World War II history buff and I’m wondering if the walking tour covers World War II information or does it just touch on it. Should I schedule a World War II specific walking tour for later in the day?

Thank You

I haven't done this particular tour, but I would expect it would be more general interest and a specific WWII tour would be the way to go.

I haven't been on this tour but did spend 2 days in Munich this summer prior to the Alps My Way tour. Here's the itinerary 's quote:
We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town, learning about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria.
You could find out if "checkered" is a reference to its role in the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party? I took
a very $$ but phenomenal tour (can be half or full day, I did the full day) that started with Dachau just outside the city and then a walking tour specifically to learn about Nazi influence on the architecture and important sites.
There is also, for example, a small and poignant memorial to the women who combed through the rubble after the Allied bombings, for rebuilding, that might be overlooked if you didn't know to look for it.
You can message me if you would like more information...
I loved Munich and the GAS Tour looks amazing!

All I remember seeing that was WWII-related on the GAS tour, was a plaque identifying a certain US military unit on a wall near the Marienplatz. I wouldn't think there would be much time for more on the orientation walk.

It's been a number of years but I'm with Stan, don't really remember anything about WWII on the walking tour. I DO remember a lot about monks and beer, though, lol!!

If you are interested and can find a walking tour that covers WWII sites, I'd do that, probably instead of the RS orientation walk. I think you've done tours before, right? So you know to let the guide and your buddy know if you are going to skip an excursion.

When we took it, there was very little about WWII on the walking about in Munich. If it is a big interest item for you, suggest exploring the possibility of a specialized walking tour that concentrates on WWII. Before you go, visit a site named thirdreichruins.com. It has many photos taken during or just after the war, and photos of the same places taken in more modern times.

We went on this tour last month and had a wonderful guide who spoke movingly about Munich's WWII history. During our free time following the walking tour, we spent three hours at the Nazi Documentation Center, which is about a 25 minute walk from where the guided tour ends. You could of course schedule a specific walking tour, but between the guided tour and our time spent at the Documentation Center we were very satisfied with the WWII coverage.

Hello
I went on the GAS tour last spring. Such a great experience. Our tour guide talked about World War II history throughout the bus trips, giving us a very good understanding of the effects of World War II on Germany and Austria.
We had a very good walking tour in Munich with a guide and he gave us very good perspectives on the effects of Hitler and how he became to power. Also, some terrific tours in Vienna loved every minute of it.

We went on the GAS tour last fall and loved it. We did not get much military history of WWII, besides relatively brief anecdotes. On our own, we went to the Nazi Documentation Center in Munich, which does a thorough job portraying the Nazi rise to power. The tour group went to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, and the Third Man museum in Vienna, both of which focus on the Holocaust. Hopefully, that helps you to decide whether or not the tour provides the information you seek.
Have a fabulous time!
