GAS and Oktoberfest

Has anyone done the GAS tour during the Oktoberfest dates? I've signed up for the 2017 GAS tour during that time, and I'm not sure what "Opportunity to enjoy Munich Oktoberfest festivities!" means. I plan to email the office and ask, but I wanted to get some first-hand accounts as well.

Yes we have. We had a free afternoon and evening in Munich. In order to avoid the worst of the crowds we went in the early part of the afternoon and were able to visit several tents without any prior arrangements. Transport to and from the site is quick and easy via the underground.

Thanks, TC! That's helpful. I'm looking forward to Oktoberfest. What did you think of it?

Dont know what TC thought, but this non-beer drinker loved it !!! Tried fish on a stick - roasted trout I think - it was great. Lots of fun, and friendly people. We went into some of the smaller tents as well and just had a ball

Brooke, I responded via PM, but I think, in a nutshell, "Opportunity to enjoy Munich Oktoberfest festivities" means that you will be in Munich during the festival time, and can go there in the free time scheduled on your itinerary. But they will also help facilitate your doing that if you want to go. In other words, its an option for you. It is a great opportunity, because they have already arranged the hotel, which would otherwise be a problem.

Our tour group enjoyed the Oktoberfest parade downtown on Sunday of opening weekend. The parade was amazing. Also had a walking tour of Munich and then we went to Oktoberfest. Our entire group went in a tent and found two tables close together about 1 pm. Enjoyed lunch, a couple beers and a great time. Six of us stayed until about 7pm and had a fantastic time. Biggest party you will ever attend. Just fun to sit and watch the people and listen to the music. Took about an hour to walk back to the train station and get back to the hotel.

Brooke thanks for starting this thread. We will be on the GAS starting 9/24/16 and will be in Munich for Oktoberfest. Very excited. We were wondering the same thing "enjoying the festivities" and it sounds so far that we should have a great time. When we return from our trip I will let you know how it worked for us.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! It sounds like Oktoberfest will be a blast and a memorable part of the trip. I like that we'll be able to set our own pace there and enjoy the festivities with the locals. Definitely let me know how the 2016 experience is!

Re: "What did you think of it?" It was great! Don't miss the opportunity to go. If you are in any area of Germany and have a chance to go to a local beer or wine fest then do so. Great fun!

I'm embarrassed to ask - but can you get wine at Oktoberfest? I'm a red drinker, but think white would be the most local? I have never gotten a taste for beer.

Re: Wine, I think every tent offers wine in addition to beer, both red and white, and if you are interested, there is one tent, Kufflers Weinzelt that specifically serves wine, a dozen or more options, and is actually open longer than the Beer tents.

Brooke, we might be on the same tour next year! We've had our eye on a specific GAS tour and was extremely surprised to see the status change to "filling up fast." I think we grabbed one of the last few spots! This will be our 4th RS tour. I loved each tour and have wanted to do GAS for a long time.

Patty, that's great! I've been trying to check the tour dates this morning to see if we might be on the same tour, but it looks like they're making some updates to the page since it's unavailable right now.

Back when we decided to do GAS, I pushed our group to sign up as soon as the dates were available because I didn't want to miss out on the Oktoberfest opportunity. I'm sure they thought I was extremely over-enthusiastic and needlessly worried about it booking up before we had a chance to reserve our spots. I'm so glad to hear my eagerness was right on the money!
