Frankfurt to Munich w sidetrip to Lucerne

I need help getting started with my plans. So already booked flights: Inbound Frankfurt and Outbound Munich. Hoping to make it down to Lucerne.

1) We are going to high-tail it out of Frankfurt. Where to first? Baden-Baden? Rhine Valley? or Berg Eltz?

2) Should we stop anywhere else before we make it to Lucerne?

3) How do we (family of 4) get from one place to the next? Can we do train??

Since the Rhine Valley is northwest of Frankfurt and everything else is south, that should be your first stop. From there you could travel to Baden Baden, Lucerne and Munich. Very easy to do by rail as the trains in Europe are fantastic. Here's a look at your route from Rome to Rio website. To check trains, go to the DB website. For additional train guidance, see the info in the Travel Tips section of this site. You also might want to consider renting a car which would afford more convenience and allow you to take detours to nearby sites along your route. If you go to the AutoEurope website you can see how much a rental would be. Since your picking up the car and returning it in Germany, you won't get hit with a high drop off charge. If you plug in your routes at ViaMichelin.com, you can get an estimate of tolls and fuel cost and compare your totals to rail travel. With a car, it would be easy to side trip to Strasbourg or Colmar, visit Heidelberg and stop at the Rhine Falls or Freiburg in the Black Forest. And that's only on the way to Lucerne.

How many days do you have for this journey from Frankfurt to Munich? Why the urge to high-tail it out of Frankfurt? Have you been there before? If not, why not spend a little time there, it's a nice place, I enjoyed my 3 nights there before heading to the Rhine Valley. But again that depends on how much time you have.

There's a lot to see in and around Frankfurt, including a large collection of towns with beautiful half timbered (Fachwerk) buildings.

I can do you a town complete with walls not far from the city, too.

Thank you Phillip loved the suggestions. Be real. Would you rent a car or do train?? I have 2 kids and my hubby and I are lazy.

Ladies, we are only going to be in Germany/Switzerland 9 nights. Not too long, really. And I do want to go to Switzerland for at least 2 nights. No offense to Frankfurt. I thought it would be best if we started right in on the touring.
