France opens, sort of

2021.06.09
Summary: France opens to vaccinated Americans and most EU citizens with proof. You apparently show proof as you board your aircraft. There are some qualifications and restrictions.

Choose your favorite online news source and search for "France Opens" to get some of the facts followed by your favorite style of reactions. (Disregard hits for "French Open", which is a different thing.)

Excerpted from story at Fortune BY SOPHIE MELLOR:
"The U.S. has been put on France’s “orange list.” Starting June 9, vaccinated Americans will finally be able to travel to Paris with proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
"France is currently allowing any vaccinated individual from within the EU to enter the country without a negative PCR or antigen test. The vaccines accepted by France are those recognized by the European Medicines Agency, which include Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson.
"This is welcome news for the country, which generates a huge amount of revenue from American tourists. In 2019 alone, 2.2 million people from the United States visited the French capital."

So, when they say they will allow vaccinated individuals from within EU to enter the country, does that mean I can enter France (with a neg test) a week later, go to Spain where it seems like I do NOT need a COVID test, a week or so later come back into France without a new COVID test. I would be a vaccinated individual traveling within the EU, though I am not a citizen of an EU country.

Pretty much up to you to research, verify, and then confirm any qualifications and restrictions you will be subject to as a citizen of your specific country. I am providing superficial information at the very best, not a link to the official announcement, which should be easy for anyone to find, nor am I offering analysis of the French government's national health policies or associated political ramifications.

@bogiesan, naturally I will keep myself abreast of the requirements. One of the many ways I do that is by following this forum. There are people on this forum that live in France and Spain, that are able to provide answers to more nuanced questions. My husband always says, no one does more extensive travel research and itinerary building than me. I"m sorry you thought this question went back to you. I meant to throw it out to folks for to discuss.

Thanks Susan, it's always good to get an idea of how the process goes. Sarah Murdoch (Adventures with Sarah) is currently in Italy. She flew direct from Seattle to Amsterdam and was completely surprised that her documents and COVID test results were not checked anywhere except at her Seattle airport. She flew on from Amsterdam to Croatia. Very bizarre. It's good to get this kind of anecdotal information, but hopefully as reopening progresses, the countries will be able to address some of the specifics.

All of this is so confusing to me. I hope that by the time I do the Loire Valley and south of France Tour next fall it will be a lot easier! Good luck to all the folks doing tours in the next 6-9 months. Hope all goes smoothly!

jules, I understand Croatia has no requirements for entry (re: Covid), maybe that’s why no one checked on Sarah Murdoch’s paperwork? I honestly don’t know, it’s just a thought.

@Susan, I think maybe it was a function of travel reopening after being dead for so long? I'm pretty sure she said her passport wasn't checked, either.

If that’s the norm after arriving in AMS that’s a very big loophole for getting into a EU country that requires a negative test/quarantine. 😆
